    • Oil pressure for ā€˜85 early model 6BTA

This topic has 1 reply, has 1 voices, and was last updated byNick 2 years ago

October 13, 2021 at 5:01 pm I had a mechanic tell me my oil pressure is low on my ā€˜85 6BTA. I was told it is supposed to be closer to 30psi at idle When I fist start the engine, the pressure gauge on the engine and on the dash both show about 22PSI..at 2000 rpm the pressure gauge is about 28psi As I idle into port, approx 800rpm the pressure goes closer to 17psi What is the standard operating PSI for these engines?

September 19, 2021 at 6:57 pm Hi everyone, I’m having issues in understanding how the ignition works on the 6BTA. One of my engines does not start and I have noticed that I am not getting a signal into the mag switch before the starter solenoid. no “clicks” 1. I also noticed that the starter solenoid + post were several red wires connect is always hot, even with battery switches off. Although console and its switches don’t have power. Is this normal? …

At the time of posting Id only had the boat for two weeks and was wrapping my head around all the to do lists. I’ve come a long way in understanding the 6bta by reading on your Tips page. I also decided to do some rather mayor maintenance to the mechanical systems (heatex, aftercoolers, gear and main crank seals etc etc) and will readdress this starting issue when I ge…

October 10, 2021 at 6:10 pm What might cause the fuel solenoid to just let go while underway? Engine would restart immediately with no problems, run for a minutes up to 10 minutes then die again. Seemed like lower speeds or in Neutral would go for longer intervals before it would die. Ran great on Friday night when we headed out for the weekend. I finally just zip tied it to get back home but the wife and kids were less than thrilled with the outing. Admittedly I havenR…

October 12, 2021 at 9:47 am I have a twin 330 Cummins in a 3988 Bayliner. I have had smoke problems since I bought it. The previous owner installed aftermarket aftercooler bundles in it just previous to selling it. Working on the smoking issue I’ve re-pitched the props from 22×22 to 22×21 and had almost no gain in rpm. I get 2700 to 2750 as near as I can tell. Pulling the aftercoolers to clean them I discovered that they have 180 tubes compared to the C…

October 12, 2021 at 7:02 pm I’m not aware of the aftermarket aftercoolers you’re speaking of, however, to eliminate or confirm them as an issue, you need to measure the pressure drop across them. That’s easy enough to do. An accurate pressure gauge to take a reading before and after the cooler. Obviously there’s a factory port post-cooler, but you may need to have one welded into the turbo to cooler pipe to measure the pre-cooler pressure.

A bit of background first: I have concluded that to change the dripless seals, the gears need to be removed to gain access to remove the shaft coupler from the shaft. Heres the catch,,, to remove the gears they have to slide back from the flywheel (gear shaft inserted there) but there is no room behind the gear to slide it back. October 10, 2021 at 11:03 am I have an oil leak on the front end of the motor where the oil pan bolts to the block. I am wondering if the pan can be dropped in the boat and a new gasket installed. At the rear of the pan I have 3″ from the bilge to the bottom of the pan and the distance increases towards the front of the motor. Looking for feed back on if that is enough room to drop the pan in the boat? Will post pictures.

October 7, 2021 at 5:31 pm Yes, a diode conducting current will heat up. To much heat and it will go PIFF. I am going to guess that it is in the line to excite the alternator for instant charging start at engine startup. NO waiting for residual magnetism to build. Some alternators need the diode to stop any back feed which can prevent the engine from shutting down when you want it to. That back feed MAY keep the fuel shutoff energized which will feed fuel thus preve…

October 7, 2021 at 5:14 pm No one yet? The “glass’ should be called Borosilicate glass which is tougher than standard glass. Ask around some hydraulic shops or diesel fuel suppliers. Also Mcmaster Carr may have some. The tops and bottoms of the sight glasses should have shutoff valves right at the tanks for exactly this reason. It is tough stuff but not infallible.
