Hi everyone, I’m having issues in understanding how the ignition works on the 6BTA.

One of my engines does not start and I have noticed that I am not getting a signal into the mag switch before the starter solenoid. no “clicks”

    1. I also noticed that the starter solenoid + post were several red wires connect is always hot, even with battery switches off. Although console and its switches don’t have power.
    Is this normal?

The console ignition switch is working properly with confirmed input and outputs on “run” and “start” positions.

    2. When the console switch is in the “run” position, which items in the engine should be DC + energized? fuel shutoff solenoid and what else?

    3. When the console switch is toggled momentary to “start”, that’s when the mag switch gets the signal to close the circuit and provide signal current to the starter solenoid correct?

3.a. Are mag switch/relay signal inputs DC+ and the current allowed to pass with the completed circuits are also DC+, or something else?

Hope I’m making the right questions.

    Thank you all!

    Alex

Thank you Tony. You are correct in that it needs to be sorted hands on. At the time of posting Id only had the boat for two weeks and was wrapping my head around all the to do lists. I’ve come a long way in understanding the 6bta by reading on your Tips page.

I also decided to do some rather mayor maintenance to the mechanical systems (heatex, aftercoolers, gear and main crank seals etc etc) and will readdress this starting issue when I get everything back together.

Ill study the diagrams carefully you have and trace signals.

Only way to sort this out is to get a DC porwer distrution diagram for tne builder and learn it. Or start from scrtch and draw out what you have.. Trying to do this over the forums without being “hands-on” at the vessel is an impossible task…. Simple & logical DC power distribution diagarms are on this web sitet for reference.
