November 13, 2022 at 2:12 pm Pulled my starboard heat exchanger off and it looks pretty good compared to some Iā€™ve seen, but before I repaint and reinstall what is the best way to clean the tubes while itā€™s out of the boat? Ā Is an hcl soak ok for the entire assembly or not needed? engines are 5.9 6bta m3ā€™s 330hp.Ā

November 25, 2022 at 8:46 am Replacing with new is over the top in my opinion. The H Ex does not fail catastrophically. Sure proactive replacement of a gear cooler is recommended, especially on the motor oil gears that run full operating pressure on the cooling circuit but a heat exchanger can get a full service and testing on the bench. Ā I understand everyoneā€™s spending habits are different as are their desires to turn wrenches but a blanket statement to simply replace a n…

November 6, 2022 at 1:34 pm Leaving the boat in the water for the winter in Rhode Island Last time I did that in late Dec on another boat the diesel jelled and since the tanks were topped we had to spend a whole day warming up the entire boat to be able to get it to start. Good times. Power Service has a cetane boost/antigel product that claims is is endorsed by Cummins, https://powerservice.com/psp_product/diesel-fuel-supplement-cetane-boost/ Any experience on using it? a…

November 24, 2022 at 7:57 am Hi Todd, nothing really special that you need to change filter often.Ā  This is simply a good additive.Ā  I change my primary racor every time I fill up.Ā  In my mind, it $10 on a $300 tank full of diesel.Ā  Some people think I am nuts, which I am, but I have done this for years and never have a fuel issue. I also am religious about Power Service and it has worked very well for me. Maybe we see each other on the high seas.Ā  Happy Thanksgiving.  …

January 16, 2022 at 9:08 am Just purchased the 160 degree T stat package from SB.Ā  I will be doing work to my HX and coolant system in the spring.Ā  No overheating issues, just 22 years old and a good time to change up.Ā  I have a new coolant pump with O ring for the 6BT in the shop.Ā  My question, what would be a good sealant to use on the metal to metal surface of the T stat housing and the coolant pump flange to the block?Ā  Reto-seal, yellow or blue?Ā  Or is there another p…

    • 2 batteries, one selector switch

December 25, 2019 at 7:57 am Merry Xmas to all. I have a simple question, and one I am sure I know the answer but would love to hear it from others who are better suited to answer. I have a Cummins 6BT with two 4D batteries. I have a simple selector switch, battery 1, battery 2 and all. My question, with this set up, I assume there is no house and engine battery. When on 1, 1 does both. When on 2, battery 2 does both. Correct. And the opposite battery from which is …

December 26, 2019 at 12:16 pm OK, Keep in mind my comments about the alternator output at engine idle speeds. I have seen people caught on that because they did not understand that the alternator MUST be run at a far higher engine rpm than idle to produce any appreciable current with the result the batteries don’t get charged, actually continue to discharge, even though the engine was run for many hours..

November 1, 2019 at 3:57 am Hey Tony, In On The Water magazine there was an article on preventive maintenance by Larry Backman. He gave you a great shout out, said “Tony is the internet God of diesels..” Thought you like to know. And I am sure many others feel the same way, I do for sure! Thanks for all the help. November 24, 2019 at 1:53 pm Oil Filter capacity is not related to OIL PAN CAPACITY and does not affect how your dip stick is marked, or “should be marked”.. Install 2 or 3 LF3894 filters in parallel on your engine and your oil pan capacity and dip stick markings will not change——————————————————-Only your SYSTEM capacity will increase. Oil Pan Capacit…

    • Water Jacket Aftercooler Maintenance

This topic has 8 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

October 27, 2019 at 5:33 am I have 1989 Cummins 6BTA 250 HP engines (~1300 hours) with a water jacket aftercooler. The engines have been creeping up in temp over the past few years getting to 190 – 195 when they should be at 180. I’ve done all the routine things to address this: cleaned heat exchangers, replaced impellers, new raw water pump, new coolant, replaced themostats, and still no change. The last thing to check is the aftercooler, anything else? …

October 24, 2019 at 9:38 am Have you checked your turbo. Is it free spinning when you reach your hand in there and spin the turbine. Should be free. I sometimes had issue with a stuck one on a Yanmar. Little spin and she would be good to go. Always let the boat cool down before shut down. Helps with the turbo and oil in the bearing.

October 14, 2019 at 5:03 am Hi to you all. Just was told about a impeller installation tool sold by impellertool.com. Guy said it was the bomb for install. Have not priced it yet but wonder if anyone has ever ordered and used this prior to me diving in. Cummins 6BT 5.9M. Sherwood 10615 impeller, key style. Thanks, John

October 21, 2019 at 10:01 am I bit the bullet and bought the impellertool.com last year after wrestling with my port engine impeller (really difficult access = no leverage). Like everyone, I’ve tried hose clamps, zip ties, lube, and brute force… yeah, that works, but I always lost some skin on my knuckles and created a few new combinations of cuss words! Only caution is that it still takes a little effort to hold the impeller in place on the shaft as you pull th…

    • 6BT fuel lift pump

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

October 20, 2019 at 6:49 am Good morning. Question on the fuel lift pump on my 6BT. I have no starting issues, starts right up. Run just fun, so no issues there. I will be changing the fuel filter. Last Friday I actuated the hand pump lever on the lift pump for the heck of it. Seemed to move very free with no pressure as I would of thought it would have. Up and down like nothing was restricting the movement. My question: Is this normal or is there something wrong…

October 20, 2019 at 9:56 am The lift pump lever inside the engine rides on a CAM.. If the engine happened to stop with the “lever” on the cam, then the mechanical pump lever will feel totally limp–“NOTHING”.. Plus, if the vlever does work, than at best it’s pretty weak at best and slow to react or recover from the little bit it pumps.. An “outboard” type squeeze bulb does 3-4X the pumping with way less effort.. Tony

October 19, 2019 at 1:28 pm Hey guys, Again, new to this boat and the 6BT 5.9M. Great motor! 440 hours. Preparing for spring. Just winterized yesterday. Check out the pic attached. Just want to hear it before I go there. Want to replace impeller. #1 Disconnect upper and lower hose. #2 Do I un-bolt entire unit from gear train and then remove the neck transition piece to replace impeller? No typical cover plate. #3 Then lash the gears back when replacing, all done?…

    • Zincs on 6BT 5.9M

This topic has 6 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 4 years ago

October 12, 2019 at 11:09 am Hi to all. New to the forum. Purchased a 1999 Eastern with 6BT 5.9M. My question, only one zinc in heat exchanger. That is what I have seemed to determine. Am I right? I have a PSS and I would assume they took the other zinc location and ran the cooling line. I am used to Yanmar ^LPA that had several zincs. Would appreciate any info. Love the Cummins, 392 hour when I bought the boat, got 440 now. Thanks
