Oil Filter capacity is not related to OIL PAN CAPACITY and does not affect how your dip stick is marked, or “should be marked”.. Install 2 or 3 LF3894 filters in parallel on your engine and your oil pan capacity and dip stick markings will not change——————————————————-Only your SYSTEM capacity will increase.

    Thanks Bill

Thanks Bill. I will got with the lower side and mark the stick. Make me laugh, stick with no marks, does that make any sense?

    Thanks again.

    John,

I disregard any oil holding in the filter as to the amount in the oil pan. Two separate reservoirs of oil in my mind.

I now own my 5th 6BTA 370. I’ve run 13-14 qts (no more than that) in the oil pans of all five engines.

I haven’t blown one up yet do to an oil failure. šŸ™‚

I recall Tony mentioning years ago that the B’s are good to run on as little as 12 qts.

Over filling the oil pan is the critical issue. Less is best.

    Thanks Rob and Bill

My Cummins 6BT has an unmarked dip stick. Will change my oil and figure about a quart into the filter. I think I read that the engine takes 13 to 15 quarts. There is a siphon hose to suck the oil out, should I figure some will stay in the sump? With a stick with no marks and a filter with one quart should I go on the 13 quart side? I don’t want to over fill by any means. I then could mark the stick at the 13 quart mark, right? What ya think?

    Thanks, John

I always pre-fill the LF3894 with oil before install.

As Rob would attest, it takes three or four pours into the filter to fill it completely….takes a minute or two for the filter element to absorb the new oil.

I always fill from a gallon jug but it’s about a quart.
