April 26, 2023 at 10:57 am Replacing the coolant in my 9kw Onan generator w/Kubota engine.Ā  It had orange coolant in it…figuring I would like to keep it simple and use the ES Compleat blue coolant in it so it’s the same as the main engines. Any issue with this?Ā  Plan to flush with some distilled water first.

April 3, 2023 at 1:41 pm 450c…one of my lift pumps leaks from under the plunger only when actively depressing the plunger.Ā  No leaks under normal operation. I’m assuming this is something as simple as an o-ring.Ā  Has anyone serviced these? Thanks.

    • Turbo Paint?

This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byMark Tripi 1 year ago

December 7, 2022 at 11:50 am Turbo going on a 450C is unpainted at this point.Ā  I’m thinking the exhaust side I will paint (so it doesn’t rust), but the air side housing is aluminum (and gets real hot)–which means it won’t rust and also means will be difficult to get paint to stick to. Anyone have an opinion on this?Ā  Any reason to paint the aluminum intake side?

February 9, 2022 at 7:04 am The leak is most likely not at leak but the oil mist/vapors in the engine room be recirculated thru the alternator (back to front) over years of use . Look closely at the back of the alternator.

December 12, 2021 at 8:30 am So I have heard the 6cta 480 described as ‘hybrid’ electronic/mechanical injected engine. what does this mean? how exactly does the fuel system on a 480 work and how is that different than a true mechanical engine and a qsb? I’m aware of the problems with the valve seat and how to address that…but just trying to understand the fuel system.

December 16, 2021 at 5:10 am I ran across a Q+A site run by JCTech. A diesel Mechanic with what appears to be some solid experience. here is a quote from him…… “The 6CTA engine uses a Bosch P7100 mechanical fuel pump, it is a purely mechanical engine. The 480CE uses a Bosch mechanical fuel pump with an electronic governor and a Cummins electronic control system.” So I figure that the detail around how the governor actually does its job and what the…

November 12, 2021 at 9:08 am I think this is a simple one…with the SMX DigitalView Mechanical Engine Digital Display kit, when you add the NMEA2k gateway, which of the data fields are transmitted over N2K? Tach, gear oil temp, boost, pyro, etc…all of them?

    • Adding fuel flow sensors to a 6cta

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJimmyK 2 years ago

November 17, 2021 at 4:14 pm Hi, I want to add fuel flow gauges to a 450hp 6cta. I want it to be on my nmea2k bus. Floscan seems sort of only half in business with a website that hasn’t been updated in years. Is maretron the only game in town? Anyone have any experience? Seems like something Seaboard could corner the market on?

November 19, 2021 at 11:05 am Thanks for posting. But NMEA2k is a requirement for me. Also, that company looks like they are out of business and the reviews were less than stellar. What is the peak fuel flow of the 450hp 6cta? Trying to understand which Maretron sensors I’d need as it seems like they’re really the only ones in the game.

September 29, 2021 at 12:52 pm twin 6bta 370’s with ZF IRM 220A-1 1.75:1 gears when going into reverse, I get noisy operation for the first second or two. seems like it’s getting worse. used to be just for a moment, now the moment seems to be getting longer. I wouldn’t describe it as grinding but maybe more shuddering. also, this gear runs at higher pressure than the starboard according to the dash gauges (starboard runs ~350psi, port pegs gauge at over …

October 7, 2021 at 6:34 pm I would check all the bolts for the coupling, that they are tight. Also check that the engine mount nuts are secure. Maybe put a mark on the gear/engine mount to see if anything moves. This is just to be sure they are not contributing.

    • 160Ā° Thermostats in a 6B: What is normal behavior?

May 24, 2021 at 5:56 am Twin 6bta 370’s, 1996 manufacture date, 1600 hours. I was battling engine temps that were creeping to 195Ā°F last season. So this offseason I took off heat exchangers, aftercoolers, gear coolers (fuel coolers were deep-sixed), rodded, acid washed, new gaskets/orings etc. There was some significant blockages in the heat exchangers around the zincs. I also decided to swap to 160Ā°F thermostats so I wouldn’t spend 50% of my time starin…

May 25, 2021 at 7:04 pm For JimmyK, My thoughts on all of this go like this….. Sure, I’d like the engine to heat to 180F at fast as possible and then have thermostat that was so “variable” that if the temp went to 181-185f it world bring the tem…

May 3, 2021 at 1:52 pm OK, so I have had a couple SMX pumps sitting on my shelf for a while now waiting until I have the time to install. Well, it appears that one of my sherwood pumps is weeping saltwater so it is now time to make time rather than wait for the free time to do this. My question is about jacking the engine/removing the engine support bracket. I was under the impression that this had to be done because the pump will not clear the engine support bracke…

May 21, 2021 at 2:14 pm pwrobert, thanks for chiming in. it is definitely nuts how this whole bracket/pump system was designed. with that said, I can tell you that for my port engine, removing the bracket & isolator mount was probably the easiest part of the whole job and regardless of whether or not you ‘can’ get the pump off without removing those things, I would remove them to make the rest of the job easier. I was a little intimidated by the idea…

April 3, 2019 at 11:24 am Hi, I am thinking of installing a couple SMX pumps on a pair of 6bta 370’s. Nothing ‘wrong’ with the sherwoods, just figured they were tired and rather than just rebuild them, I’d upgrade them. Have read tony’s tips on the subject. April 15, 2019 at 9:14 am If the lower nut doesn’t move that tells you that the height of the engine hasn’t changed as a result of your work. As far as the engine moving laterally only if all of the studs on the isolators were installed vertical with the engine and not angled in or out or whichever way, only then will the motor probably stay put. If the isolators are angled, then as they were tightened up initially there could be some “Spring” i…

April 10, 2019 at 6:30 am 1. When reassembling motor mount bracket, how do you make sure the bracket goes on the engine in the same exact place/orientation? Is the fit between the bracket and bolts tight enough that you don’t have to worry? Or should I scribe a line around the bracket and align it by eye? Or does the motor need to be realigned? Or am I overthinking it? 2. What torque should I tighten the top motor mount bolt to after putting everything back to…
