6CTA – Turbo Dripping Oil
This topic has 4 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 26, 2024 at 7:08 am First time I noticed this was after putting the boat back in the water yesterday and going for a long ride to test temps out after servicing the Aftercoolers per Tony’s method. Ā There was oil ontop of the transmission which seems to be coming from the Turbo. The oil is clean and looks new so it must be from my recent oil change which is why I believe this is a new thing that happened yesterday.Ā Ā Ā
4 RepliesMay 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm Those are some ugly pictures!Ā Lots of saltwater around the intake while underway (looks like even the air filter is covered in rust?!) and the color of the paint on the turbo intake side also speaks volumes.

Aneriod Adjustment?
This topic has 12 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
February 27, 2024 at 7:05 am I have a pair of ’99 6CTA’s with 2,400 hours.Ā I’ve owned the boat for 13 years and these engines have been great.Ā But, on takeoff, the srtb engine shows some black smoke and needs a little more throttle than port to get the turbo to kick in.Ā It has always done this.Ā Once on plane, all good.Ā Just when getting on plane does this happen. I remember a “lazy Aneroid” discussion here, and thought this might be the ca…
12 RepliesApril 4, 2024 at 11:01 am Finally figured it. Turbo – leaking oil and sent out to Turbo Dave for new cartridge – result – brought boost up 10 lbs Turbo pipe gasket leaking after rebuild – found that and got a little more boost going where it was supposed to go. Rebuilt fuel pump was in the equation also – after confirming boost was back up, had to adjust the AFC a few more clicks to get it just right. Results – engines spool evenly and…

6cta slow acceleration and black smoke
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
April 3, 2024 at 8:16 am I am having slow acceleration and black smoke from 1300 to 2200 rpms. Takes about 15-20 seconds to go through that rpm range. Boat is 40ā Ā just had bottoming done, serviced aftercoolers, heat exchangers, impellers, and fuel. I do not have boost gauges.Ā
2 RepliesApril 3, 2024 at 11:34 am No idea why you’d check your fuel filters w/black smoke, but the air filter isn’t a bad idea.

Better than that, navigate to the low power troubleshooting guide on this site and go through it step by step.

160 VS 180 ThermostatĀ in 6BTA 5.9 M3
This topic has 6 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 3 months ago
February 14, 2021 at 11:17 am Looking for advice at to whether I should stick with the 180 or change to the 160. I’ve read the article and would change to a 160 if I ran off-shore, get the protection factor from the additional prevent alarm at 190. Here are my current boating conditions: Most trips are 15 to 20 minutes cruising before I drop lines, some times less. Max cruises 45 minutes, which I do more just to ‘run’ the boat under a load. Troll a lot,…
6 RepliesFebruary 6, 2024 at 12:01 pm My experience w/the 160 t-stats in 6bta 370s was meh.Ā Yes, it ran cooler, but too cool at idle/trolling speeds.Ā They start opening close to 140 which is just too low.Ā Maybe I got a couple odd balls but they were both exactly the same. Keep the cooling system up to snuff, have an alarm that works, and pay attention.

QSC 8.3 smoking out exhaust

January 16, 2024 at 1:17 pm Re: QSC 8.3 Hello I am experiencing smoke out of the exhaust after we reconditioned the head and replaced the turbo. We also did a full maintenance on the engine. Could the injectors cause this ? The air cleaner is cleaned and oiled regularly.Ā Thanks Mark

Twin Cummins 6CTS won’t run with generator running..
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 5 months ago
December 12, 2023 at 5:50 pm I have a 36Ā“ Luhrs with twin Cummins 6CTAĀ“s and a Kohler generator. Was running a couple of weeks ago and hit the trim tabs and both engines shut down. No clue if the tabs caused an electrical spike that was just enough to fry a weak circuit but the timing does suggest it. After a lot of testing and poking around, I confirmed the fuel solenoids are closing as soon as the generator is started. Engines both run normally if I donĀ“t crank the genera…

Help before I make a mistake…

November 28, 2023 at 8:28 am Hi, I am reaching out for information, as there just isn’t much out there, and I agree that compression isn’t the only telltale sign of a problem. I am looking at a vessel to purchase from a private owner that has a reported compression issue in the port side 6BTA. The reported issue is in cylinders 1 and 6, and the reported compressions were 180 on these cylinders, 300 on the remaining. I’m not unfamiliar with Cummins marine, …

6BTA Starter/Mag Switch questions
This topic has 8 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 5 months ago
November 24, 2023 at 12:51 pm Hello all, I have a recently rebuit 6BTA and just have a couple question about the wiring of my starter. I read all about the Mag switches and can’t seem to find one on my 6BTA. I’m wondering if the starter I have needs one or is it built in? Any help is appreciated.Ā ThanksĀ
8 RepliesNovember 28, 2023 at 6:06 pm Sorry, I was not trying to correct anyone’s terminology. Just pointing out that the starters discussed here are not the same as in an old Ford Fairlane. Those really did have a genuine bendix starter, which is a cheap alternative for relatively low-end use. Because of the extra electrical power needed to push the pinion in a Cummins starter the mag switch is quite important.

RAW WATER HOSES
This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 5 months ago
February 21, 2021 at 2:15 pm I have a 1996 6bta and i was wondering if the hoses from raw water pump to cooler are molded and i recently bought certified wet exhaust and coolant hose that is corigated or flexible for replacement will this be ok the hoses are two six inch pieces with pipe in between
7 RepliesNovember 27, 2023 at 8:51 am Add some backpressure to the seawater circuit from lack of service of the aftercooler, gear cooler and or heat exchanger and that hose really becomes a weak link like this one.

Prime/fuel issue – 2004 Cummins 480CE’s

October 23, 2023 at 4:01 pm Hi Everyone. Ā Changed all 4 engine RACORS + generator. Ā Went to start up both engines, port engine started up with no issue, starboard not so lucky. Ā Ā Primed it and fired up no problem. Ā Ā Fast forward, took the boat on a trip 30 miles, parked it and got back to boat — starboard started up for about 30 seconds and died. Ā Ā After further investigation, it looks like the prime valve is leaking a little. Ā Ā Ā I ended up limping the boat b…
10 RepliesNovember 14, 2023 at 12:04 pm More troubleshooting today. I hooked up a sucker pump with additional line via the RACOR to simulate the boat trying to get fuel. Interesting enough, I got a lot of girlge (air) noises when doing so and then about 5-10 seconds later after the air purged, poof… fuel was flowing through there very steady.

Is it possible that I got all the air out of there? Is there some other kind of pump associated with/near the Bosc…

Perplexed! Performance/Propping my 6CTA’s

November 7, 2023 at 10:12 am Hey guys, I purchased my Formula 41PC with twin 6CTA’s a little over 2 years ago now and I have been absolutely struggling to get my RPM’s and props dialed in. The boat had a set of 5 blade’s on her that were only reaching 2400 RPM’s and after reading all of Tony’s Tips related to propping and revs I knew this was nowhere even close. Cracked pistons
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 6 months ago
October 30, 2023 at 9:14 am I just pulled the head off one of my ’97 6bta 370 hp engines w/1350 hours due to a coolant leak at the right front of the motor. I have had no overheat issues but I haven’t had the boat that long, and it still ran up to rated 3000 RPM with no smoke. I found two cracked pistons in cylinders 1&6. I have attached the worse of the two below, which was in #6 hole, furthest away from the leak. Does anyone have any idea what could cause…
1 ReplyOctober 31, 2023 at 10:28 am Amazing that the engine was still able to make rated RPM w/no ill signs.Ā I would bet the coolant leak is a separate problem.Ā Take a look at the head gasket.Ā Typically these engines first leak from coolant passage to outside, not to the combustion chamber, near #1 cylinder.

October 15, 2023 at 1:44 am Hi All, The alternator on my 6bt5.9M Cummins has blown diodes and I need to have it rebuilt or else get a new one.Ā I live in Oxnard/Ventura area and was wondering if anyone has experience with a good alternator rebuild shop? 19 RepliesOctober 29, 2023 at 12:01 am OK, I have installed the rebuilt alternator, added the temp sensor to Balmar external regulator, programmed belt manager to B-4, set the temperature limit to 92C in the advanced programing option——- fired it up and so far everything runs the way it should.Ā More than adequate current from alternator and it is not overheating. Thanks everyone for all you help.

Cummings 6BTA low RPM at WOT
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
September 1, 2023 at 9:51 am Recently removed turbo, heat exchanger and wet exhaust can to replace the can. Had all checked and re installed. Engine started , ran well at dock but when under load would only turn up 1800 RPM at WOT. Prior to the work being done would turn 2400RPM. Turbo is free and can be heard spooling up when throttle advanced but will only turn 1800 WOT. Checked turbo it is free and creating boost. Someone suggested problem may be with the Aneroid control…
3 RepliesOctober 4, 2023 at 8:02 am If you removed the turbo & associated plumbing, make sure there is no leak between turbo & intake manifold.Ā A single loose clamp in that plumbing will cause your symptoms.

August 31, 2023 at 10:19 am Hi I recently bought a Galeon 420 that has a pair of QSB 5.9 Cummins – fantastic! Unfortunately the previous owners didn’t take good care of her so I’m working my way through servicing and replacing various bits – it’s starting to add up! 160 vs 180 thermostat
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
August 31, 2023 at 6:20 am I currently have the 160 deg thermostat installed in my 6bta. I do a lot of drift fishing at idle and slow trolling. My temp gauge usually reads 145-150 even at cruise. Should I switch to the 180 thermostat considering how much idling and slow trolling I do?
3 RepliesSeptember 1, 2023 at 7:06 am So Iām on the Long Island Sound. Rare that my runs are more than 45 mins. My boat is way overpowered as itās a 25ft downeast hull with a 6bta. The engine is rated to 370 but the prior owner detuned the engine to about 315 by under propping. My cruise is around 2300 RPMs. But most of the time Iām idling while drifting for fluke or trolling at 3.5 kts for stripers. There is white smoke at idle and at the slower trolling speeds. I have a raw water …
