    Good luck

Attached are some pictures of the generator…. The last picture is the soot on the water. I ran the generator with the air cleaner out and the top off, no smoke with no load, as soon as I added a load it began to puff black smoke. The filters were crumbling when removed, intact while installed.

Let me know what you think.

thanks Tony. I will get picks tomorrow

As for your other questions, the unit has been extremely trouble free for the time I have owned it, probably the last 300 + hours.. Yes, out of the blue it did this yesterday for the first time. Being winter the unit went unused for about 3 to 4 weeks. Unusual to leave it idle so long, so we decided to run it yesterday.

About 3 years ago I had the unit out of the boat to change to a new raw water pump and new (SS) exhaust elbow, new hoses, hose clamps, and fan belt and other misc maintenance items.

I use the unit for about 4hrs a month + or – a few, running an air conditioner (15 amps) done in 3 increments a month after a fishing trip…. for at least the last 4 years. That is 1 hour or 1.5 hours after a trip, at a time.

I change the oil at least once a year or 100 hours which ever comes first. I change the impeller every year. I change fuel filters about every 6 months.

    More with pictures tomorrow.

I have posted two new topics, neither has showed up? Something is wrong! Both were related to fuel coolers on a 6BTA….

I don’t mean to hijack this thread but I do not have a Magnetic pick up – any chance of a picture of the hookup for an electronic tach sender?

    thanks

BTW, Before I changed out to Tides Marine I had PSS drip-less and with in a year the bellows got a crack and leaked, thank god for rescue tape. PSS Sent me a new one and said “never heard of this before”? but coincidentally another boat in my marina had the exact same thing happen within a couple months of my problem…. You could sink your boat if the shaft log fails, also, I am a believer in old technology, the old compression type shaft log have worked forever and failure is unlikely!

I too ave tides marine drip-less seals for over 5 years, other than preventive maintenance such as changing the hose clamps they have worked flawlessly I recommend if you are changing out – go with these…. call and talk to them, if you have a failure during warranty they will pay for haul out as well as replacement. Impressive!

Hey Rob, thanks for the comments, actually I thought I was experiencing a problem that was mine, with a few exceptions.
I know all about Aetna, I tried to get them to take care of the problem in the past but they would not help. Basically unresponsive to any customer satisfaction, your comments add fuel to this comment. I sent the tachs back to them and they told me they were fine???

so to answer your question the 80 + hr error took about 3000 hrs to get to. I guess nothing for me to do from this point but view it as a source of irratation and bear with it.

Is it possible to put a pressure gauge on the engine fuel filter? there seems to be additional ports, perhaps racor style gauge fitted on one of those ports would be helpful.
Such as # 4 in the picture?

    any comments appreciated.

I don’t mean to hijack this post but I saw the link for bleeding instruction for a QSM and wondered if there was a similar link for a 6BTA 5.9 Mk3?

    thanks
