    • Looking for 6 CTA mechanic, New Bedford, MA

August 1, 2023 at 6:57 am Just taking a chance here that someone might know an experienced Cummins mechanic to take a look at my Cummins 6 CTA 8.3 mechanical diesel in Mattaposiett, MA (near New Bedford). The local Cummins dealer keeps pushing out, but tells me I shouldn’t use the boat and I am loosing my whole summer. I seem to have internal pressure in the engine that is forcing oil out the exhaust side of the just replaced reman turbo. So, as I understand it I n…

    • 6 CTA Aftercooler housing repair while I wait for a new one…

March 29, 2023 at 5:30 pm Took my aftercooler in for testing at Niemic my local Cummins dealer and the core bundle had pinholes and there is pitting in the housing right up to the oring seals. Bought the boat last year, it and the engine are 1998, so time for a new one. Niemic tells me these are out 100 days. So I called Seaboard and the helpful parts guy told me they have the core, but similar bad news on the housing. He also told me that Seaboard is working on its own …

April 8, 2023 at 3:14 am I have used an Italian product called Belzona 1391T for such an issue before with good results.Ā  The trick is to blast and clean the surface and have all oils and grease gone.Ā  Apply a thin coat with a fine wide artist’s camel hair brush.Ā  On curved surfaces like the inside of the AC I like to use something like a piece of the wall from a 4 inch PVC pipe with stick-on PSA sand paper (various grits) to finish it down. • Sherwood M71 impeller replacement interval

This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byDalton Bourne 1 year ago

April 9, 2020 at 2:07 pm I have the M71 pump on my 2004 6bt 220hp Since there is not an SMX pump for that model. Due to Covid I am on the boat Full time and operating the boat daily 2-8 hours usually at only 1200-1600 rpm to save fuel. I would normally change the impeller annually with about 150ish hours, but this year will likely see many more hours than that. The current impeller was new in November and now has about 250 hours. (Impellers and new pump purchased from S…

March 27, 2023 at 7:03 pm Boating experts recommend the best time to replace the boat impeller is every 100 to 300 operating hours or every three years. The replacement cycle for the impeller is also based on the frequency of use and the condition of the water. You have to replace the boat impeller soon if there are signs of damage or deterioration, such as melted rubber, bends, cracks, and other deformities.

February 16, 2023 at 10:54 am Replacing the TwinDisc, already replaced the engine mounts and shaft seal; prop and shaft sent out and tuned. New cutlass bearing What about the engine rear seal? Engine is 25 years old with low hours. Just thought it would be good to do any preventative or periodic work there with the transmission in the way.

November 6, 2022 at 1:34 pm Leaving the boat in the water for the winter in Rhode Island Last time I did that in late Dec on another boat the diesel jelled and since the tanks were topped we had to spend a whole day warming up the entire boat to be able to get it to start. Good times. Power Service has a cetane boost/antigel product that claims is is endorsed by Cummins, https://powerservice.com/psp_product/diesel-fuel-supplement-cetane-boost/ Any experience on using it? a…

November 24, 2022 at 7:57 am Hi Todd, nothing really special that you need to change filter often.Ā  This is simply a good additive.Ā  I change my primary racor every time I fill up.Ā  In my mind, it $10 on a $300 tank full of diesel.Ā  Some people think I am nuts, which I am, but I have done this for years and never have a fuel issue. I also am religious about Power Service and it has worked very well for me. Maybe we see each other on the high seas.Ā  Happy Thanksgiving.  …

November 3, 2022 at 11:52 am I have a 1998 6 CTA 430HP with a recently rebuilt Bosch starter. It starts fine now. Boat has TWO AGM 8D start batteries, new, rated at 1450 cold cranking amps each. I am trying to find what the spec is and what the best practice is for start battery capacity. Elsewhere on this forum someone mentioned 1225 CCA was adequate, but I did not see any reference or documentation. I have never had an engine this large and never needed more than one star…

    • 6CTA 8.3 M3 Transmission, switch TwinDisc to ZF?

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 1 year ago

June 26, 2022 at 5:24 am I wrote in last month about this engine and ended up buying the boat. Exciting times… The mechanical survey showed one of the blades on the prop was slightly bent, sea trial showed vibration and the Twin Disc 5061A 2:1 oil sample showed very high copper apparently meaning perhaps the vibration had affected the clutch pack and it should be rebuilt, so transmission rebuild recommended. No problem, we will fix the prop, check the shaft replac…

August 17, 2021 at 12:58 pm I have a 2004 ZF63A driven by a Cummins 6BT 220HP that I typically run at 1600-2000 rpms. Everything is working fine and I try to follow all of Tony’s Tips for maintenance and get all my maintenance parts here! October 7, 2020 at 2:35 pm So to frame the conversation: I don’t know anything about turbochargers. Engine is well maintained and running well. I put 600 hours on it in the past 12 months. Next year I intend to travel farther afield and will likely put around 1,000 hours on in some remote places. I generally run it at only 1600 rpms to conserve fuel and provide it with a periodic WOT gallop. Since I only have one engine and I will be in areas with no readily availab…

October 8, 2020 at 5:05 am Todd, If the exhaust design is proper and the engine is operated properly then you should get significant turbo life. Check out the Tony’s Tips section of this site and read the articles on Turbos and what causes “premature death” https://www.sbmar.com/articles/what-a-marine-diesel-turbo-should-look-like-when-inspected/ Infact you might want to check out the post that was done after yours about the guy looking to replace or re…

August 6, 2019 at 11:51 am 2004 Cummins 6BT5.9 with ZF 63A transmission 4000 hours maintenance parts Good morning all, I am purchasing a trawler with this combo and the pre-purchase survey is Friday. August 7, 2019 at 9:35 am Todd, Let’s slow down here…. simple “will it fit” questions are easy for us but things like pre-purchase assessments, maintenance intervals, running gear assessments, etc. can be lengthy and complicated to answer and need to be split up to be addressed effectively.
