S/N 5588627, 468 reported hours. Twin Disc Trans. This is on a 1998 Hinckley Talaria that has reported had only very light use over two owners. I have am familiar with 6BTs, (and I buy the service parts for them from you) but not CTAs. It is mechanical and I like that, and I understand the “marine age” concept, so I am moving carefully. I have not been to the boat and these images are from the local broker. I will be there in ten days with a hi resolution digital camera, but I am hoping to review here and uncover any obvious problems or get more info to press forward with when I get to the boat. I also have recent oil samples, but the boat isn’t run much, so not sure how useful they may be.

I have maintenance receipts going back to 2017 showing annual fluid, filter, impeller changes, etc. HX was reportedly serviced in 2020 (though does not look in from the end caps in the photos) and Aftercooler in 2014. Do not have receipts yet for those.

I have a mechanical survey and sea trial with a local Cummins marine mechanic on June 13. As I understand it this is a 2600 RPM WOT engine so we should look for just over 2700 on sea trial to know it is not over propped.

Attaching photos and fluid test results here.

Also, looking for your input here on any upgrades that this engine could use to make it more robust. Raw water pumps, etc.

    Thank you,

    Todd

    Thank you Rob,

all good points. I think I may also ask for the disassembly and Seaboard style reassembly of the aftercooler since it is a big $ part, probably an inspection of the HX as well. I am also keen to get the freshwater rinse attachment for the Groco.

Is the Seaboard Envirovent better than the Walker airsep in the photos? They appear to me to be of very similar design?

    Thanks again,

    Todd

engines look in decent shape (cosmetically), if you end up getting it, I suggest you go through all the hoses and clamps in detail. I have the same engines on my Tiara and they are great engines.

She’s already equipped with the SMX raw water pump, and the SMX cover plate to boot.Ā  Wow, low hours, that’s a lot of sitting time.Ā  Might be a boat that has a lot of pop up issues once she put to real use which is fine if you are a DIY.Ā  Nothing really jumping out at me other than going through the engine top to bottom; belt, hoses, complete seawater component bench servicing, etc.Ā  Consider simplifying the CCV and going with the SMX EnviroVent.Ā
