I wrote in last month about this engine and ended up buying the boat. Exciting times… The mechanical survey showed one of the blades on the prop was slightly bent, sea trial showed vibration and the Twin Disc 5061A 2:1 oil sample showed very high copper apparently meaning perhaps the vibration had affected the clutch pack and it should be rebuilt, so transmission rebuild recommended. No problem, we will fix the prop, check the shaft replace the seal and cutlass bearing while it is all out. The problem is that a rebuild of the TWINDISC is almost $10K and wont likely be done until Labor Day, so my summer is gone. I am on Cape Cod and cannot find a rebuilt until except in FL and I don’t want to get one that far away in case there are warranty issues. So my mind wanders to a new transmission. Is the ZF286A a suitable replacement without requiring a lot of modification of the mounts and the rest of the drive train? Is 1.96:1 compatible with the current 2:1? Apparently the 5061A is a 7 degree down angle. If I move to a ZF is the potential re-build cost lower than TwinDisc? (should I ever need that) $10k seems pretty steep. Other than basic maintenance, I don’t know anything about transmissions, so go easy on me. You have my info on file so if appropriate you could send a quote by email or text. Separately, I am going to ordering a bunch of things for the CTA, spares, fresh water flush, etc. Thanks for being a great resource!

30+ years of dealing with random oil samples from transmission has shown that 99+% are “worthless” as to there value.   The numbers say you are fine if you are basing your concerns on an oil sample only…

Thank you Tony. Will give that a try. Just concerned about reliability more than anything.

If the oil looks relatively clean ( not burnt smelling or  looking)  and  the transmission works good, IMO, completely  ignore the oil sample at this time. change the oil, service the oil screen, pour /flush  at least 1 quart of fresh oil thru the cooler and oil lines, run a couple of trips and do it again.. Then,  go fishing and sample it next season…   Super nausea to change gear styles–you have a good gear
