2004 Cummins 6BT5.9 with ZF 63A transmission 4000 hours maintenance parts

    Good morning all,

I am purchasing a trawler with this combo and the pre-purchase survey is Friday. The engine and transmission are both very clean.

I have an engine survey being done as well.

The engine has had valve and turbo service in the last two years, about 1000 hours ago.

Should I replace the turbo as a preventative measure? Injectors? I will definitely order a new Sherwood pump and keep the old as a spare.

There are no service records for the ZF 63A. From the tag on the unit:

    ZF 63A – 2.5
    A=2.52 B=2.54
    S/N 32572H . 3312001018

The ZF tech charts seem to show that model might be a bit under speced for the 210hp Cummins?

What do I need for service parts/consumables for the ZF at this time? Are there any service intervals for it? Could not find on your site. Also, do you sell an oil pressure and temp monitoring system for this Transmission?

We are going up and down the East Coast over the next year or so and anticipate about 500-1000 hours per year. So I have happy to get the right parts from you and ensure the right service is being done now to save aggravation later….

Thanks for everything! I always get my Cummins parts from SBMAR!

    Todd

    Todd,

Let’s slow down here…. simple “will it fit” questions are easy for us but things like pre-purchase assessments, maintenance intervals, running gear assessments, etc. can be lengthy and complicated to answer and need to be split up to be addressed effectively. We’re not trying to pass you off by any means but cannot always give everyone the “one-on-one” guidance they want and still run a day-to-day business of re-powering boats, filling orders, etc…. just not possible anymore.

Let’s get past that and move forward because we DO want to help you, here are some links below to some products and/or articles that may be helpful… once you determine the kind of package you want to put together, we can help guide you but at a base (I will work with you personally once you get a handle on what it is you want), you would never replace HP based components as a “preventative measure”… only after a thorough troubleshooting of witnessed performance issues would you explore replacing major components such as the turbo, injectors, etc.

Rather, it’s always a good idea to “spruce” up the engine with maintenance-based components such as impellers, zincs, filters, belts, hoses, gaskets, o-rings, etc. TO START. Then after a couple seatrials, you’ll know if you need anything MAJOR.

This site is a lil tough to navigate occasionally. https://www.sbmar.com/product-category/engine-components/seawater-pumps/

I only have one engine, so one post is appropriate for me.

Further, I first went to the website and could not find what I need. Then I sent a message to customer service who instead of answering me told me to post on the forum. Then I had to screw around with my login that did not work. I have over an hour into this and have few reasonable answers and still cannot order anything.

Last I checked SMX does not make a raw water pump for the 6BT5.9 and even if it does I could not find it on the website. Is there something new?

Now I am being told to search even more after providing specific related to what I need.

I have always relied on Seaboard for straight answers and good products. I am not simply asking for free advice like many who post here.

Single posts with lots of questions can be cumbersome to address properly, best is to do more specific posts.

Should I replace the turbo as a preventative measure?
Not unless something is damaging it like seawater ingestion, salt air intake, etc. Post good pics of the air side (compressor) and the exhaust side (turbine) with the air filter and the exhaust removed.

    Injectors?
If they are on a diet of clean, water-free fuel they should need no attention.

I will definitely order a new Sherwood pump and keep the old as a spare.
Sherwood?? I think you meant SMX..

What do I need for service parts/consumables for the ZF at this time?

Metal mesh filter and the 2-orings. The filter can be properly cleaned and reused. Search our forum for this with me as author, I know I have posted on it before.

Are there any service intervals for it?
The book should be 300hrs. Get yourself the operator’s (owners) manual

Also, do you sell an oil pressure and temp monitoring system for this Transmission?
There’s no “boxed” one size fits all for this, several options as to temp/psi, gauges vs alarms, sender/switch mounting locations and methods, etc etc etc
