So to frame the conversation: I don’t know anything about turbochargers.

Engine is well maintained and running well. I put 600 hours on it in the past 12 months. Next year I intend to travel farther afield and will likely put around 1,000 hours on in some remote places. I generally run it at only 1600 rpms to conserve fuel and provide it with a periodic WOT gallop.

Since I only have one engine and I will be in areas with no readily available Cummins service, I would like to consider something like a preventative disassembly/rebuild/replacement if it makes sense. OR should I expect it to run for thousands more hours? I want to leave as little to chance as possible.

BTW, how much is a replacement turbo? I cannot find it on the site.

Thanks for any experience and insight.

    Todd

    Todd,

If the exhaust design is proper and the engine is operated properly then you should get significant turbo life. Check out the Tony’s Tips section of this site and read the articles on Turbos and what causes “premature death”

    https://www.sbmar.com/articles/what-a-marine-diesel-turbo-should-look-like-when-inspected/

Infact you might want to check out the post that was done after yours about the guy looking to replace or rebuild his HX40m turbo. That is what premature death looks like on the inside………

Post some pictures of your engine from all angles and we can guide you better.
