MattParticipantYessir. I left them open as it was just easier and less stressful. No margin of error with them open. The fresh water showed a 17ppt reading so the flush with them open left them with pretty close to regular fresh water. So I am very happy with the results

MattParticipantI have a 2005 420 dancer as well with the 480’s. I am down to 24.5″ inch pitch with a light cup. At 2000 rpm my last look at the fuel flows were showing 10.3 and 11.0 That was about 3/4 fuel and just me on board.
The prop shop told me the most they could take out of a prop was 2 inches of pitch. I got down to 25″ on the original props, but was still concerned about the flows. I was very fortunate to find a pair of 25 inch props from Merritt Island when they shut down. I am considering taking out another half inch so I can just load her up and go stress free.
I had the heads replaced proactively a couple years ago, for piece of mind. I am still trying to figure out what is causing the difference in flows, sometimes it is more than a gallon an hour.

MattParticipantThanks Rob! Still some things that need to be done to make it truly āSeaboard Styleā but getting better everyday.
I am so appreciative of the help from this board, you, Corey, Tony and countless others have really saved me a lot of heartache and got me moving in the right direction to correct some manufacturers laziness
Still some more to do, but itās a labor of love. She has given me so many great memories on the water!

MattParticipantThanks Barry!
Mechanic just called. It seems the engine diagnostic switch was in the on position for the suspect engine. It is located under the dash by my feet. Just the perfect height for a Jack Russell to hit while chasing shadows(or for me to kick). First time for everything( had the boat for 12 years) Live and learn. He also said he didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with the sound of the solenoid, and said they ran great, sounded good.
Thanks to everyone for the help!

MattParticipantHere are a couple videos of the fault code and the odd sound it makes. Sorry for the length, and I hope I didnāt use any inappropriate language.

MattParticipantout with the old. Just a progress update

MattParticipantDid they make any improvements on the new heads to allow you to burn closer to their published 480CE burn numbers? Or is it still advisable to keep to the 450 burn numbers?
I know mine was run overloaded by the PO and some by me before I discovered Tony’s advice. So I feel like I am on borrowed time(part of the reason I did not take the boat to Cuba last summer) I hate having the thought of dropping a valve in the back of my head every time I go somewhere, kind of takes the enjoyment out of cruising.

MattParticipantClark,
Yes Sir the oil pads were there, that’s actually how I noticed the pieces.Ā Both engines started shedding the pieces within a couple hours of each other.
Thanks,
Matt

MattParticipantHAHA Very true my friend!!Ā
I spoke with my mechanic again today about the torsional coupling, and he said that was his first guess but there were no signs of black powder around the top of the transmission and flywheel bell housing area.Ā He stated that the bell housing has a vent plate with small holes that are too small for the big chunks of debris to get through.
Thanks as always for you help.Ā Back to guessing…

MattParticipantThanks Rob, we discussed that, but since it is at the other end of the transmission, we ruled that out.Ā And I have not noticed any different rattles or noises.Ā I ran them the other day and was happy about howĀ great things sounded.Ā Ā I have also found some of the debris on the actual engine support bracket directly underĀ the belt housing.Ā The other weird thing is that both engines started to do this at the same time.
Some have said it was the crankshaft balancer(not sure if that is the right term), but we were told it was a one piece design on the 480’s so I am not sure how that is failing.
Thanks again for the help, it’s like seeing your kid sick and not knowing what’s wrong!
