May 22, 2022 at 10:55 am Thanks to Justin and the crew for an easy upgrade.Ā  I had the caps shipped directly to Seaboard and they handled the rest.Ā  Then as I flushed the engines, I did a little testing to see how much better I was treating the engines. I grabbed a little saltwater aquarium water tester to see how much better the water was with the kits and leaving the raw water seacock open.Ā  I took a scoop of water off the back of the boat and it measured about 28ppt,…

    • 6CTA 8.3-M4 480CE Sea Trial Data (How much Pitch Reduction?)

June 4, 2020 at 11:30 am Tony, I surveyed a 2005 42′ Searay Sundancer with a pair of 6CTA 8.3-M CPL 2960 with 1400 hours which I understand are 450 CE engines advertised at 417 h.p (not sure if that is correct) as they can be 460? During sea trial both engines at approx. 2000 RPM were burning 15.1 gph. at 2600 were burning 24.7/25 gph. I have read the article about dropping valves as a result of over propping resulting in an overloaded condition. The boat is runni…

June 6, 2020 at 8:41 am I have a 2005 420 dancer as well with the 480’s. I am down to 24.5″ inch pitch with a light cup. At 2000 rpm my last look at the fuel flows were showing 10.3 and 11.0 That was about 3/4 fuel and just me on board. The prop shop told me the most they could take out of a prop was 2 inches of pitch. I got down to 25″ on the original props, but was still concerned about the flows. I was very fortunate to find a pair of 25 inc…

January 20, 2018 at 9:53 am I’m looking at a 2003 43 sportfisher with 480CEs 4400 hours. Owner states the hours have been 96 percent 10kts or less traveling to baja and back. He also states that fact can be proven from digital logs. Receipts and logs look like the maintenance has been done. Port aftercooler was replaced last year and starboard was removed and cleaned a at the same time. I know it’s impossible to answer with the information I have………

That fact that she made governor speed prior to re-pitch and with only 350 hours and things now made right she “should” be okay going forward but, as you know, there is no way to know 100%.

    • Stop Engine Light illuminated

April 25, 2019 at 5:43 am 480 CE engines on a Sea Ray 420 Sundancer. When you toggle the start switch to the first click, where it normally says “wait to start” for a few seconds, this time I also got the “stop engine” light illuminated, and I heard an odd ratcheting sound. It sounds as if the sound is coming from a pump next to the fuel manifold. I was able to see the “stop engine” flash a code of 2-3-7. Unfortunately the videos …

April 26, 2019 at 1:00 pm Thanks Rob! Still some things that need to be done to make it truly ā€œSeaboard Styleā€ but getting better everyday. I am so appreciative of the help from this board, you, Corey, Tony and countless others have really saved me a lot of heartache and got me moving in the right direction to correct some manufacturers laziness Still some more to do, but itā€™s a labor of love. She has given me so many great memories on the water! Matt

August 10, 2018 at 11:16 am I have finally decided to get the monkey off my back and replace the cylinder heads on my 480 CE’s. We have a 2005 SeaRay 420 Sundancer, and are the second owners of the boat. I know it was overloaded before we owned it, and I ran it overloaded for a year or so prior to finding Tony’s information here. I attached an estimate. I have been so paranoid about this issue that I have been reluctant to use the boat, especially since I lea…

March 23, 2017 at 4:36 pm I have a pair of 480CE (s/n 46484363 and 46484197)Ā Ā in a SeaRay 420 Sundancer, and I noticed pieces of hard plastic or rubber under the belt guard of the engines.Ā  I had the belts replaced, and they were fine(not the reason for pieces).Ā  My mechanic and I are at a loss as he does not see where they are coming from as well.Ā  Any advice?

March 30, 2017 at 5:31 am Clark, Yes Sir the oil pads were there, that’s actually how I noticed the pieces.Ā  Both engines started shedding the pieces within a couple hours of each other.   Thanks, Matt
