July 25, 2023 at 9:53 am Hello, My engines at cruise power (75-80% load) are running about 185 deg.Ā  Wondering if this is a concern at all. Aftercoolers will be serviced this winter.Ā  I have 2005 QSB 5.9 engines.Ā  What should the normal operating temp range be?

    • Diesel View to Vessel View 1.5 question

This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byAndy 1 year ago

November 20, 2021 at 8:34 am Hello, I’ve read all the great info on here regarding SmartCraft but just need a short answer. I found a used Vessel View 1.5 unit and would like to use it to replace the old Diesel View. Is this as simple as plug and play? Connectors on the back look the same. I realize the mounting hole would need to be enlarged a bit. Just wondering about the harnesses. Thanks in advance.

April 10, 2023 at 2:11 pm Tony, I think I may be at a dead end. I have installed a used VesselView 1.5, 84-8M0054863 harness, 4993480 adapter harness and an ignition harness to connect port and stb. junction boxes.Ā  However, I also have the old SIM revision, as defined in SBMAR’s “cummins-dieselview-display-upgrades” post. Do I understand right, that no matter what I do, the old SIM revision will not work with anything newer that the Diesel View unit th…

    • Winterizing question

October 10, 2022 at 9:03 pm Winterizing question. I have QSB 5.9 engines .Was thinking about using fresh water tank filled with pink to feed engines through strainer flush fittings to winterize. (I would attach a short hose from engine room spigot to strainers).. Has anyone done this? Any potential issues? Not sure if engine suction along with fresh water pump pressure would be ok. Side note: I did do this on the genny last year as it wasnā€™t pulling from the bucket and it …

October 11, 2022 at 6:19 pm Hard to picture or know how the freshwater pump plays into it but the engine will develop plenty of suction so just make sure it’s sucking what you want it to. Ā Don’t try to feed the engine anything….let it drink with its own pump.

    • 2005 QSB 5.9 Alternator question

March 2, 2021 at 12:31 pm Hello. I have QSB 5.9 circa 2005 engines. Need to replace an alternator. Looks like the 19SI is correct but not sure if the 105 amp or 145 amp is appropriate. Can’t get to motors now due to shrink wrap. Thanks in advance for your input. BTW Replacing an alternator due to an occasional intermittent metallic rubbing sound.

    • Antifreeze quantity for winterization

October 30, 2020 at 1:51 pm Hello. Have QSB 5.9 engines. Is 7 gals of antifreeze enough to run through each engine for winterization?

October 30, 2020 at 3:24 pm Should be fine. I run 6 gallons through my 6BTAā€™s. I first pull the zincs to drain the coolers to minimize dilution. I catch what drains out the transom exhaust outlets and check with a refractometer and itā€™s always a match to whatā€™s in the jug.

September 7, 2020 at 7:26 pm Hello. Have twin qsb 5.9 engines. Engine oil is black. Iā€™ve read that this is normal for diesels? I change oil at end of Every season. Is it ok to refresh oil by draining a gal and replacing with fresh oil until end of season full oil change?

September 11, 2020 at 5:31 pm You are totally OK. The oil gets black very quickly and is NORMAL. 60-75 hrs is no problem and no need to change the oil except the one time for the season in your case…

June 8, 2020 at 9:23 pm Iā€™ve read all the great info here on engine load/fuel burn etc. After checking my numbers it looks like Iā€™m overpropped. WOT only yields 2890/2950 rpms at 99% load. And my cruise burn numbers are above the curve by 2-3 gph. Engine temps are around 175 deg. No black smoke. Aftercoolers/Heat Exchangers just serviced along with new gear coolers. Spoke to a prop shop who said WOT should be at least 3050rpm at approx 96% load. My question is how …

April 26, 2020 at 1:14 pm Hello. I’ve enjoyed all the posts about fresh water flushing. I currently have flush connections on my strainers that I connect the hose to directly. I’d like to add a ball valve and quick disconnect to avoid having to screw the hose connection on and make it much quicker. Just wondering if you guys see any issues with a quick disconnect type connection? Also, after shutting engine down and the fresh water is still on, does the e…

    • SMX water pump replacement on QSB

This topic has 3 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byMike Mason 4 years ago

April 15, 2020 at 9:07 am Hello. Just wondering how difficult it is to replace the water pumps on QSB 5.9 engines circa 2005 with SMX pumps. The SMX pump says “plug and play”. Can someone explain the replacement process? I’m assuming plug and play means that the existing pulley assembly stays on and the new pump shaft plugs in so to speak? I am very handy but have never replaced water pumps. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

September 25, 2019 at 8:53 pm Hello. We were returning on a cruise and got an audible gear cooler over temp alarm on port eng. Gear oil temp was at around 220 deg. Shut down engine let it cool. Checked fluid level which looked ok. Dipstick not melted or deformed. Ran boat home at reduced speed with port gear temp in the 175-188 deg range. Transmission shifts smoothly, no noise, not hot to the touch. However, shaft is turning slowly in neutral. Mechanic inspected gear cooler…

August 15, 2019 at 2:57 pm Hello gentlemen. I’ve read your great articles regarding propeller load and engine life. I have a 2005 Sea Ray Sundancer with Cummins QSB 5.9 380’s. First diesel boat and love it. Just got back from a 6 day cruise and paid close attention to my fuel burn as it relates to the performance chart that you reference. At a comfortable cruise power (about 2450-2500 RPM, about 75%load) which yields about 21knots, it seems I’m burn…

    • Coolant recovery tank level

July 12, 2019 at 6:32 am Hello. I have QSB 5.9 engines. Just wondering if the plastic coolant recovery tank on the back of the engine should have coolant in it. Mine are empty and was wondering if I need to add some. In my previous gas boats, there was always a cold and hot level line on these containers. Thanks

April 6, 2019 at 3:42 pm Hello. Couldn’t find anything on the forum so here’s my question. When replacing the secondary fuel filters on QSB 5.9 engines, I’ve heard to put new filters on dry and cycle the engine start switches multiple times energizing the fuel pumps and filling the filters. Is this correct? And if so how many times do I cycle the switches and for how long with each cycle? Also any input on the best and least messy way to replace t…

October 30, 2018 at 12:35 pm I want to replace these Trans. oil cooler lines. Looks like I’ll have to have them fabricated at a local shop. My question is when I disconnect the fittings am I going to get a lot of fluid coming out of these lines? And when I put the new ones on, is there an issue or concern with air in the lines? Do I need to do anything special or just top off the tranny fluid and start the engine? Thanks PS.- Engines are Cummins QSB 5.9 with ZF80-…
