August 8, 2017 at 1:02 pm Engines are 1994 cummins 6cta 8.3’s rated 400 hp with denso pumps. Work completed in the last 1.5 years: Two new aftercoolers, Rebuild of seawater pumps, replace serpantine belts, new injector tips, Valve lash adjusted, two new turbo chargers, descaling of HX exchangers, addition of Fresh water flushing (used all the time since new coolers put on). This weekend while boating, when we put the boat on plane, 2150 rpm, 20 PSI boost, 19.5 …

Thought I’d give the community an update on this old thread. The mechanic who was aboard was very pleased with the RPM, he said most setup’s he see’s struggle to get past 2550. • raw water coolant flow rate at idle??

July 30, 2018 at 11:27 am This is a question which may cause me to modify my fresh water flushing approach. First, if anyone can check my calculation, that would be great. Per a spec sheet I have for a C series 400 engine, raw water flow is 63 gpm (assuming that number is at rated rpm. So, doing the math, I calculate a flow of 14.5 gpm 18.7 gpm at an idle of 750 rpm. April 13, 2018 at 3:58 pm I was in my engine room and doing some cleaning and painting, general checking for leaks. Recently we had to take the starboard Turbo off for replacement of exhaust elbow, that described in a different thread. While looking around, I noticed that the valves which controlled coolant flow to my coolant filter were closed. That had been done I expect to lower the coolant (Not done by me, done by my mechanic). April 13, 2018 at 5:47 pm The two small coolant valves only allow a slow flow thru the Coolant filter.. Closed or open, will not affect anything to do with engine temps.. If it makes you feel better, they eliminated the filter all together on the QSC.. Personally, and from 25+ years of dealing the the 6CTA, I’d have no issue eliminating it as long as you check coolant makeup every few years/ 2000 hours ( which you should do anyway) .. With the mid-stop liners in…

    • Coolant recovery bottles?

April 6, 2018 at 11:34 am I’ve noticed that I never have coolant in the recovery bottles. Could this be a sign that I need to new caps, that something isn’t operating correctly? The recovery bottles are mounted on a bulkhead at least 1.5 feet higher than the main coolant tank, and they are 4 feet away from the tank. Perhaps the hose is performing the function of the recovery bottle?

April 5, 2018 at 5:03 am I’ve got 6cta cpl 1282 engines circa 1994, rated 400HP. I’ve sorted most of the issues/deferred maintenance out over the last several years, and am getting to the point of buffing up the last of it. The CCV system on the engine has some type of filter which appears to be non serviceable. On my boat, it connects to a hose which simply points straight down, and is showing no oil/puke coming from it or below it. That makes me think p…

But to answer your question, yes there is an Envirovent setup for the 6CTA…simple and affordable. December 7, 2017 at 2:52 pm I am about to change the oil on my 6cta engines. Typically I’ve had all the parts and oil on hand and have a mechanic I trust do the labor. A big yard bill for new bottom paint, cutlass bearings, engine alignment and prop tuning has really eaten up the budget, board of directors (my wife) is concerned. February 16, 2018 at 2:41 pm We spotted some tiny weeping from one of the stock cummins elbows, and decided time to replace before big problems occur. We are going with a new design, but one that will fit pretty close to the existing foot print. The approach we are taking is a dry 90 elbow with insulating wrap, with a 4 inch long shower head at the end of the 90. That takes the injection point well below the turbo outlets, and ensures that gravity is always working on o…

My existing elbows completely drain, but a potential failure point in them is too close to the turbo’s for my comfort. What we are doing is taking the existing elbow geometry and constructing a dry section which is very similar. That is then extended another for inches for a shower head which is well below the turbo. The entire wet section is well below the turbo, so gravity i…
