Over the last two days, I serviced my aftercoolers, which had been assembled 25 months ago via the SBMAR protocol. Cores separated from the housing with 1 tap of a mallet against a wood block on the core. Service was complete in about 3 hours including reassembly. 25 months ago, I tried to service the aftercoolers. Per receipts I received upon purchase, those coolers had been split and serviced 24 months prior. In that first instance, both cores were hopelessly frozen, and I ended up having to purchase 1 new complete AC and have the other significantly machined. The cost of that service cycle was around 5,000. This cycle is around 250.

Point made, maintenance is cheaper than repair, and Tony provides world class guidance and support. From what I can see of these cummins 8.3 engines, they are solid engines, and if you keep an eye on the trouble spots, you can get unbelievable hours out of them. Mine are 1994 vintage with 1,300 hours, so I look at marine age spots. Constant cleaning, painting and keep the engine room as dry as possible. Hoping these engines outlast me.
