    • Feedback on 6BTA CPL 1975

This topic has 10 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byWoo 7 months ago

June 25, 2021 at 9:17 pm I’m assisting a friend looking at a 33 Riveria with a pair of year 2000 built 6BTA with CPL 1975. 280hp rating @ 2600. I’m no stranger to 6B’s, but looking for any feedback that this particular spec warrants looking at. All the usual suspects check out well, they achieve 100rpm over rated at full throttle, and thankfully the exhaust mixer design is well laid out. Still has the original (albeit rebuilt) Sherwood seawater pumps …

    • HELP! Cummins 555 fuel pump leak

August 24, 2023 at 8:25 pm G’day team. Helping my neighbor here with one of his glorious old 555 naturals. I think this is just a coincidence, but this occurred right after changing all fuel filters. Symptom is; Starts and runs fine, then after a couple of minutes running, engine stall regardless of throttle opening. Will restart quite well immediately, possibly a little bit of fuel starve type misfire. Starts perfectly after sitting for 5 minutes. Have checked all …

February 2, 2022 at 10:21 pm Trying to assist a friend here with a Riviera 33 with 6BTA’s backed by MG5050A in a believe, 1.5:1 ratio. Diagnosis: Gearbox is in Fwd gear even when shifter is in Neutral. Move shift lever to Reverse instantly stalls engine. Oil filthy black with metal. Anyone had this issue before that can shed some light on it before we get the transmission out? Likely repairable or do we feel, likely a write off? If a replacement is needed, anyone wit…

    • Iveco NEF – Cummins related?

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byWoo 2 years ago

November 11, 2021 at 4:39 pm Hey team, I’m assisting a friend with the possible purchase of a vessel here in Australia. The broker/seller is claiming these “FPT Iveco” engines are Cummins based. I see no relation to a 4BT other than the bore/stroke dimensions are very similar. I’m very reticent to prove any positive feedback as these seem a bit left-field for my taste. Parts pricing and availability a question, and being electronic, who has the softw…

November 11, 2021 at 6:36 pm Thanks Tony, you’ve confirmed my concerns. I’ve already recommended that the prospective buyer walk away, and this reinforces that. I’m simply not comfortable recommending them. Once again, thanks for your valuable input.

    • Barry Mounts

July 27, 2021 at 4:59 pm Hi all, I currently have engines out and notice 2 of my Barry Mounts feel slightly different to the others. Question is this, the two that are different have some movement between the rubber and the housing, whereas the other 6 are firmly in there. Are the 2 different ones shot? 700hrs and very good alignment.

    • The SeaBoard way and Fresh Water flush

July 26, 2021 at 4:48 pm I’m sure we’re all well aware of “The Seaboard Way” when it comes to S/W aftercooler preemptive maintenance, but here’s a few pics to bolster why it should be done, and if at all possible, fresh water flush after each use. Here’s some pics of mine coming apart last night, first time since splash 6 years ago. They were reassembled the correct way prior to splashing and always fresh water flushed. They came ap…

    • EGT and mechanical B series

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byWoo 2 years ago

January 24, 2018 at 6:32 pm Following some interesting observations I have some questions. Boat has a pair of 370B remans. SBMar upgrades prior to install, and every box ticked for a proper install. Exhausts show very little back pressure. Engines achieve 100rpm over the rated 3,000 consistently at full throttle. Please keep in mind that my EGT readings might appear high in isolation, (however when I shift the probe to the opposite side of the turbo outlet elbow they̵…

June 28, 2021 at 7:58 pm I failed to respond to this earlier, so my apologies. Each 100rpm closely transfers to 1 knot of boat speed. So 600rpm = 6 knots, 2,000rpm = 20kn, 2,600rpm = 26kn and 3,100rpm = 31kn. This is quite accurate except around the transition to planing speeds. She’s planing cleanly by 15kn when throttling up, and will hold plane down to around 12kn with a bit of tab in reasonable weather.

    • 6BT – Okay to sit on cast sump?

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byWoo 2 years ago

June 9, 2021 at 10:03 pm Pulling the engines from the boat as it’s the least invasive way to access a fuel tank issue we have. In an ideal world I’d make a timber support frame to sit them on but I’m struggling for materials. So the question is, can I sit these things down on the cast alloy sump once out of the boat or absolute no-no?

    • 6BT370 – propping advice

This topic has 6 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byWoo 6 years ago

June 29, 2017 at 6:30 pm Last year I relaunched a boat after a refit and fitting it with a pair of reman program 370B engines. The boat is planing design, quite narrow, very deep V, and quite heavy, and doesn’t carry heavy fishing loads particularly easily do to the nature of the design (narrow). Prop guys were advised “355hp @ 3,100rpm” and upon relaunch, and we were close, achieving 3,050 on one, 3,080 on the other (corrected to accurate). Of course,…

July 2, 2017 at 4:25 pm No not at all Bill. Our rudders, shafts, and props are all covered in PropSpeed. However, it’s been an extreme season for growth in our marina, and a shortfall of usage hasn’t assisted with keeping it clean.

    • SMX Displays – I'm excited!

November 17, 2016 at 6:25 pm Well, here we are, on a new forum! To welcome it in, I’ll post this bit of news, I finally have my new displays fitted up along with the NMEA connect option! My engines are mechanical B’s, so to have the digital configurable display options is very neat. So pleased I didn’t have to alter the dash layout (this is a repower/rebuild project) to have the factory Cummins analogue display panels fit in the dash area. These SMX displa…
