    • To run or not to run…

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byBrent 3 years ago

April 15, 2021 at 10:05 am Curious what the pros say about a laid up boat in winter, whether or not to run engines frequently or just leave them be if the boat will not be moving. I’ve heard that unless a diesel engine is under load there is no point in warming them up just to shut down again. Thanks

April 15, 2021 at 10:32 am Hey todd FWIW I have VP D6 w/ IPS and if nothing else the manual recommends starting every two weeks just to circulate the water in the exchangers. I think this has to do with minimizing the corrosion potential.

    • O-ring with FS1000 filter

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 3 years ago

April 3, 2021 at 10:21 am I bought the Double Muti Filter kit and the FS1000 came with a small O-ring, but the other filters did not. I’m assuming this small ring goes on the threads of the filter head before you screw on the filter. Someone explain the difference to me please. What exactly is the small ring for?

April 1, 2021 at 6:39 pm Lose the cooler and the fuel block and you will have eliminated several potential leak points and hoses. Itā€™s a fairly simple project. I have done this a year ago on one engine and and spent following season monitoring and comparing the engine with cooler vs engine w/o cooler. Fuel on non cooled side runs only 4-5 degrees higher. And that is after 6+ hours running. Not to mention easier impeller changes. I will be removing the other side. Back t…

March 30, 2021 at 6:24 am Hi, looking for advise on our hydraulic system. We have purchased a 1984 Hudson Force 50 Ketch – 25tons – with a Dual Helm Hynautic Steering system MS-1150/1175/1200 Helm unit H41, Cylinder no. K-3. We have a long run keel and a very heavy full length rudder. All is ok under engine and the helm is reasonably light, however under sail, and especially when there is some weather helm it is a different story. The steering becomes so d…

March 30, 2021 at 7:39 am As a long-time sailor I can say that the correct way to fix the hard steering with “some weather helm” is to correct the weather helm. Basic sail trim. I had a similar noise problem on my current boat with hydraulic steering, dual station, when I bought it. The solution was a very thorough purge of air in the system. I don’t have any special bypass valves or the like, so I just kept adding fluid to the upper helm as needed and …

March 17, 2021 at 5:06 am Just a general question, more or less to compare notes and get an idea how others do things. How do you run-in new shaft packing in the water? I generally set them relatively gently with a light trickle of water and find that they slow down over several hours of running and then can be “fine-tuned”. It’s ideal when I have access to the boat and can go make the adjustments myself. I have a customer that disagreed and opted t…

January 11, 2021 at 10:13 am I have a fresh rebuilt 6BTA in a boat I have been restoring for a couple years. • No Seawater strainer?

February 23, 2021 at 7:35 pm 2001 QSM11’s on a 42 convertible and I noticed today (pre-purchase) that there are no sea water strainers on the raw water system. This “feels” like a bad design, but i’d like to believe there was good rationale by the boat builder when built. Should I move adding strainers to the top of my must-do list if survey is successful? Picture on next post.

There are lots of choices but those two can warn of overloading the engine far earlier than other means.
