I was going to call Tony and talk to him about my motor mounts (Yanmar 4LHA-STE) and what he would suggest for replacements. I decided to ask my questions here so that others may learn as I do.

I have really old style Yanmar mounts which were installed during my repower by Tony in 2000, thus they are 18 years old. I have attached a picture that shows one of the mounts. There are more and better pictures on this site in the section on my repower (Audax, Bertram 28).

These mounts have a bolt spacing of nearly 7 inches. Most mounts I have seen only have a spacing of about 5 inches.
Question 1. Tony, what do you recommend for direct replacements? I really do not want to drill new mounting holes.
Question 2. The only direct replacements I have found are made by R&D (PYI). Are these any good?

I look forward to your comments.
    Thanks
    Bill F.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.
I’ve been “on the road”, so to speak.
I was able to find the original, old fashioned style mounts.
So I can not really say anything about which R&D mount to use.
Although, I just remembered that a friend of mine just purchased some R&D mounts. I will check with him and find out which ones he got and how they work. He also has 4LHA-STEs.
    Standby.

R&D Engine Mounts for 230HP Yanmar

    Hi Bill
I saw your post on the R&D engine mounts and followed up on the website provided. Which showed the PYI R&D Marine engine mount for the 4LH motors to be Part 800-021YX with a capacity of 120-410lbs. I am in Australia and R&D Marine here have suggested 2 possible mounts 800-031 with a capacity of 300 to 685lbs or a softer one 800-030 with a capacity of 251 to 566lbs. I am thinking the softer one should have more than enough capacity and take any vibration out at idle. What is your thoughts.
Also with the 230 Yanmar motors, because they did not come with the option of counter rotating props and I have the original Bertram rudders it is a bugger reversing in wind into the berth any tips?
    Regards
    Gary

I have attached a few pictures. Some taken yesterday. Others fairly recent.

The first pic is the same pic as above but taken in June of 2015.
The second pic is the same mount (port, inboard, rear) taken yesterday.
    The third is the same
The fourth pic is embarrassing! Stb. forward inboard mount. I have had trouble keeping this mount clean since day one. It gets wire brushed and painted on a regular basis. It is currently due!!! Back to this in a bit.
Fifth pic is just a fairly current overall view of the engine area.

Tony, I looked yesterday for the numbers. I could not find them. I will look some more.

I know that these mounts will need to be at some time and now may be the time. I think($) that 17.5 years in a very wet boat is really not bad.

Part of my addressing this now is that I have had, maybe for a year, a very slight vibration in the port motor at idle in gear. It vibrates more than the Stb motor and is quite noticeable. I have been trying to sort it out for a while and can not find anything wrong! Interestingly, the vibration goes away when the RPM is increased by 100. Both motors are completely smooth all the way to 3500+ RPM. It could easily be argued that the vibration is normal for a 4 cylinder engine, and it may be. It just seems to me that it has increased at some point.

Any way, I think motor mount replacement is one possible fix??? and they are probably long past time for replacement.

Look forward to thoughts from everyone.

Tony, what do you think of the R&D mounts? Found any others?

    Thanks to all

    Bill

PS, this old boat gets a pretty good workout. It was out fishing 115 days in 2016. I have not counted the days for 217 but similar. 600 hours in 2016 and 670 hours in 2017.

    Hi Tony
I’m just walking out the door to go fishing.
Picture was 2006, attached is one from 2.5 years ago.
I have no desire to change style, just looking for a good, solid, direct replacement. I will elaborate later, but one of the problems is that my mounts are cast iron body and no mater how hard I try a couple of them are slowly disintegrating. So I will need to replace them at some point. Maybe soon.
I will look for the numbers. Here is the link

    http://www.pyiinc.com/downloads/r-d-marine/r-d-marine-yanmar-engine-mount-price-list.pdf

Also, I have a very slight vibration in the port side. I will explain in detail later.

    Thanks
    Attach the picture later

    Bill,

Question for you first………………….The picture you attached.. When was it taken?

As to you question–with 17 years on these mounts, why would you even consider changing designs ?

Go down in the engine room and look real close at the bonded rubber wedges–I am looking for a number molded into it (50, 60, 70, 80 ??)

Let me see what I can find..

You said R&D has a “Plug & Play” replacement? Send/ post a link..

    Tony
