Welcome to the site…………….  You will find nothing but honest help here proven over decades & 1000’s of hours of learning diesel engines as to what works, and more importantly, what doesn’t work.

Where I believe this site really excels is dealing with the last two generations of high performance diesels (smaller displacement light iron diesels that produce 60-80+ HP per liter) and are really the reason why diesels in pleasure boats have become to where they are the engine of choice.

If you are a “new” or close to a new diesel boat owner, you’ll need to wipe all of your preconceptions away and start by reading thru the articles on this web site. We guaranteed much is extremely applicable to your engines and some is just for general knowledge, but all is applicable to the long term.

Regardless of your initial concerns, a few of what I call my premium articles on owning a modern diesel engine built for the high-performance market need to be absorbed as they are so important to long term engine health – All of these type of engines  started coming into the market in the early 80’s and basically all have the same issues when it comes to maintenance and understandings what they need to maintain general health.

    MARINE AGE:  http://www.sbmar.com/articles/marine-age-the-real-age-of-a-marine-diesel-engine/

    ENGINE LOADING: http://www.sbmar.com/articles/engine-life-vs-engine-loading/

Next on your list of things to do to allow you to stay super happy with your new purchase is to keep reading thru this site and articles. Learn this term — “Marine Age” and how THIS is what determines your  “what to do when” maintenance schedule on your engines. IMO, about the only thing the hour meter is good for is oil change intervals and working with fuel burn and a spread sheet if you wanted to determine long term ownership cost base on actual use. Learn about fresh water flushing and learn about keeping the ravages of “Mother Nature” from taking out your $100K engine room from the outside in—A Saltwater laden atmosphere takes no prisoners when it comes to mechanical equipment and over a 10-20 yr. period, this is what really separates the owners that really know now to take care of things to ones that just think of the next oil change.

Learn 25% of what is here and you’ll never need to read your O&M manual again: http://www.sbmar.com/tonys-tips/

And last————One of the best things you can do early on is to go down to your engine room with a good camera—Shoot 10-20 pics from all around from all angles and perspectives. Clear and in-focus!!! Posting them here works the BEST.  The “eyes” of the professionals on our site miss very little if the pics are good as to what you may need to be concerned with. Just one more service you get with registering with the SBMAR Community and interacting with us should you really want to know particulars about what you have. And don’t forget to tell your friends the same…

AGAIN,  WELCOME from the SBMAR TEAM!

    Thanks Corey and Tony,

I can already see this Forum is a wonderful resource and I have been an avid user of Forums for the early Porsche 911 community for years. Forums are an excellent way to share knowledge and solve problems amongst like-minded enthusiasts.

Now that I am a twin diesel powered boat owner (having come from a long sailboat background), I intend to ensure these engine remain reliable and dependable for many years to come. I will be using this boat for extensive and long-distance cruising up and down the East Coast of Australia so reliable and enjoyable cruising is what I need.

My background is engineering and technology and I can see this forum covers many topics of interest to me so it will remain as a great reference source. I have already read many of the articles and am starting to build a good reference library saved to the Cloud that I can refer to as needed.

Keep up the good work guys !

    regds,
    Phil

Thanks to Tony and the Seaboard crew for this forum!
I appreciate your willingness to share info and tips with the public, not many people in the business are willing to look far enough ahead to see the value in this!

I hear ya loud & clear Hill.  Seaboard fabricated my risers from 3,000 miles away and I tell you they couldn’t be a better fit even if the welder was setup in the cockpit of the boat!  I thanked Tony for a great job but he put a lot of the credit on me for being able to provide them with very accurate details and data.  That is the key for like you said “all via the internet, pictures and phone” and most anything is accomplished.

BTW, for many many years my dad and a bunch of his fishing buddies did a Ketchikan lodge trip every other year and were never disappointed.

    Thanks Rob,

The team at Sbmar has done a great job for me over the past 11 years of charter service all via the internet, pictures and phone.  Can’t be beat.
