January 8, 2023 at 4:49 am Goodmorning sailors, I have a nagging problem that I hope somebody can shed some light on. On our QSC8.3 490hp of 2006 vintage I have to add about a quart of coolant every 100 running hours or so. I already have taken of the turbo and replaced the exhaust seal as I thought it might be disappearing through the exhaust. This did not solve the problem. Oil is staying clean and at level, no funny smoke at startup, no coolant under engine, no coolant…

May 2, 2022 at 10:23 am It appears the distance from the raw water pump to the electronic control panel is not far enough to get the impeller out of its housing. I have not yet replaced the impellers and want to. Just making sure before I get into it that I do not, or have to remove the raw water pump. Looks like poor engineering regardless.   thanksĀ  Ā

Remove them from the housing to clean? If removed is it ok to get cleaning product on air side of aftercooler?

May 19, 2022 at 11:01 am All raw water coolers need servicing and should have their cores removed to be cleaned. ie; the heat exchanger and the aftercooler especially or you won’t be able to fully clean the airs side of the core. It’s best and easiest to remove them and perform the services on the bench.Ā  Aftercooler: https://www.sbmar.com/articles/cummins-marine-aftercooler-maintenance/

November 26, 2021 at 9:33 am Good evening, in the meantime, thanks for the very important suggestions. I noticed that there was a lot of mud inside the compensation tanks. The liquid that came out was pretty clean but I would prefer to do a general cleaning of the system. I was told that it is very important to finally purge the system of air. Can you tell me which valve I need to open to vent the system? I read in the manual that it is important to start the engine with th…

May 23, 2020 at 8:23 am I was just reading a comment Tony made about being able to flush the engine when off with the right exhaust. My exhaust is thru the bottom of the hull. So water is introduced in a shower ring just before it exits the boat. So water running simply falls out. Iā€™m removing my fuel cooler, installing a 115 degree pump exit and was going to run a hose down to bypass the cooler (6CTA8.3) Now Iā€™m thinking this would be the perfect spot to install a hos…

July 1, 2021 at 9:07 am My set up is fantastic! Very simple and only take a couple of minutes (by myself) to flush with the engines off. Its so simple to do, I flush these engines every time I start a motor. I can do this because (as you can see in the pictures I posted) my exhaust is discharged directly through the bottom of the hull (NO Exhaust lift)(not common) As for yours, its not the exhaust leaving the engine you have to evaluate, it how it gets out of the boat…

June 28, 2021 at 12:45 pm New boat to me, and the aftercoolers have never been done. Big thank you to KevinS for a great method to remove them with plywood and compressing them out via caps. Opinions on how they look? What do you recommend for the housings to clean them up? A few areas look pretty corroded…. A bit of background: – Engines are QSC 8.3 550 HP and are propped within spec. 800 Hours. – NW boat its entire life. 3-4 out of the past 12 years …

June 29, 2021 at 6:59 pm Thank you everyone. I agree, they’re toast. One last question: – Is there a way to see if any damage has been done elsewhere in the engine? Any signs, or things I should check/lookout for? I’m leaning towards cleaning, pressure testing the cores here, then assembling and pressure testing the airside. Then just get through the summer here in Portland (freshwater only) and scrap the cruise we were going to take up north. I’…

March 2, 2021 at 12:52 pm I have a relatively new to me (1 year) express with twin Cummins QSB 380hp engines. Last season I had a couple WIF alarms, but never found any evidence that there was any significant amount of water in the fuel. March 3, 2021 at 2:45 pm I made the switch last year. I just utilized the squeeze bulb primer and pushed fuel through the Double Double, into the new on engine filter and then through the remainder of the on engine fuel system until hearing a steady stream of diesel dropping back into the tank through the return line. Another dozen squeezes for good luck and the engine fired right up without even a hiccup.

September 16, 2020 at 5:53 am Kopptain, One more thought. Do you have a cooling line running from one of your coolers (gear oil cooler for example) to a dripless shaft seal? If so, that is where your water is going. That line should be taken off and plugged to avoid this (if that is the case).

August 7, 2020 at 6:26 am Ed, The important fuel burn is what is burned in the all important cruise range. This is where you will be running your engines for the majority of the time. So for that boat odds are that is 2000 – 2300rpm. Accordingly, the boat is over propped in that range. 1 inch should be a good start and then watch how the fuel burn goes for a season and then evaluate if want another inch taken out. Your sea trial was in almost ideal conditions…
