    • Picture Request: 6CTA Oil Pump

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byDave Lincon 1 week ago

May 7, 2024 at 4:37 am Chasing down a lower oil pressure on port motor – SN#46309849 – 1200 hours. Doing routine maintenance this weekend and also changing out the oil pressure relief valve and was recco’d to do the oil pump as well.   Does anyone have a picture of its location?  I can’t seem to find a good one online and I have searched for a while.  (Forum search function still down).

February 27, 2024 at 7:05 am I have a pair of ’99 6CTA’s with 2,400 hours.  I’ve owned the boat for 13 years and these engines have been great.  But, on takeoff, the srtb engine shows some black smoke and needs a little more throttle than port to get the turbo to kick in.  It has always done this.  Once on plane, all good.  Just when getting on plane does this happen. I remember a “lazy Aneroid” discussion here, and thought this might be the ca…

April 4, 2024 at 11:01 am Finally figured it. Turbo – leaking oil and sent out to Turbo Dave for new cartridge – result – brought boost up 10 lbs Turbo pipe gasket leaking after rebuild – found that and got a little more boost going where it was supposed to go. Rebuilt fuel pump was in the equation also – after confirming boost was back up, had to adjust the AFC a few more clicks to get it just right. Results – engines spool evenly and…

February 8, 2024 at 2:04 pm right before I winterized I was coming in and my tachs starting bouncing up and down, sometimes they were reading zero, then come back up and just fluctuate.  The engines are running perfectly (6CTA-8.3M), I do have a Glendenning synchronizer, people are saying “bad grounds”, well, I cleaned all the ground connections from the battery, and behind the console (its a Tiara 3800).   Other folks say metal on the pickups, I ordered two ne…

    • Different fuel burn rates on twin Cummins QSB 5.9 480hp

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bylpmcc 6 months ago

October 24, 2023 at 1:17 am Hi there.  I recently bought a 2001 Topaz 32 Express in Australia. It has twin 2012 Cummins QSB 5.9 480hp.  The boat runs great and been very reliable so far but I notice the starboard motor burns 10% more fuel than port.  Could this be a prop or alignment issue or something with the engine?  Thanks Rob

October 25, 2023 at 5:10 am Also to note, the gear ratios in the trans might be different port to strb.  One might be running in “reverse” to go forward and the reverse ratio could be slightly different than forward.

September 21, 2023 at 10:19 pm Hello i have a 450 6cta with the older style aftercooler that has no kind of condensation drain on it, and living in the great humid state of florida it likes to build up the condensation in the aftercooler. July 22, 2023 at 5:15 am Exiting a lock the other day, port motor died. 6CTA M2 ‘97 vintage. On engine filter was almost empty and Racor filter was very low. Changed primary and on engine filters, pumped up the system, engine started up and purred as usual for a couple minutes and died again. How do I test for fuel pressure at the injector pump?

June 6, 2023 at 10:36 am Hi, I have a ’99 6CTA with 2,400 hours.  While changing the on-engine fuel filter last weekend, the primer pump on the Bosch injection pump leaks when pushed, nor does it seem to pump fuel.  The engine seems to run normally, my question is can I run the boat this way for a while or is it “mission critical”. Thanks Larry

February 15, 2023 at 12:33 pm Think I finally found source of coolant leak on 2005 480 CE.  My question…if coolant leak source is the coolant pump, is it safe to go home 700 miles as long as I keep coolant topped off?  Or is leak likely to get much worse? February 21, 2023 at 8:45 pm 2000 6CTA 8.3’s on a SeaRay 410 Express. Occasionally, after cruising 1900-2200 rpm for more than say an hour cruise, when I drop the boat back off  plane to idle speeds my STBD engine does not come all the way down to a normal idle.  It will remain 150-200 rpms higher than the PT engine.  If I shut down the engine and immediately restart, it begins to idle again normally.   It has been intermittent, but any advise would be great.  Thanks!

February 22, 2023 at 5:58 am Do you have a Glendenning synchronizer?  And use it?  If so, that is probably it.  Once you come off plane, with the synchronizer off, just increase the strb throttle a bit and bring it back down to idle.  It should.  The synchro cable just needs to reset.  Mine has done that forever.  I’ve just learned to do this after a run.
