    Hi all,

I was here last year with a rattle in my Cummins Starboard motor and with a great deal of help from here that problem was solved.

1999 Diamond C Series Loud Rattle – Cummins Marine Forum (sbmar.com)

I only have one issue now and that is that when one of the mechanics was aboard he suggested that the rattle was the valves and of course it wasnt but I let him adjust them and since that day it has been harder to start than the Port motor which starts the moment the button is touched.

The Startboard motor does start but it takes about five seconds which is annoying and i was wondering if poorly adjusted valves will caus this.

    Regards and thanks,

    Doug.

    Or was it?

Thinking back I have been reminded that there were a couple of times before the valves were touched that the motor did make a hard start. It took the wife to remind me but she’s right. I put it down to being a bad battery and having to use the parallel start button to kick it over and thinking back it may have been acting up forĀ  while. Just put four new 8D bateries on board last week and theyre fine but the hard start is there when cold. I started both motors this morning and as expected the startboard took about 5 seconds to start and the port fired right up. Went back a cuple of hours later whislt they’re still warm and both started right up. I hope that both this and the pictures help. Thank you…

Ok I have taken a couple of pictures as requested however theres not much room to step back as you can see in picture #3 and please keep in mind that this hard start only happened once the valves were adjusted. Thank you again.

    Rattle

Ipmcc, I’m sorry that I didnt get back and finish off the post about that darned rattle. I was so happy when i found it that i forgot. Anyway it was a metal bracket that was holding a cable on the back side of the motor that couldnt be seen. It eventually shook loose and fell of whist still attached to the cable and when that happened it was easily detected and fixed back although not exactly where it came from but its back and bolted down. Once again I’m sorry that I didnt finalize the post after all the great help that I received. Thanks again, Doug.

What was the cause of the rattle?
