I just wanted to say thanks to Tony and participants of this forum. After 15 years in a giant shrink wrap tent, I splashed my 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 and had a pretty much incident-free 108 mile run to my new home port. As part of the refit, I repowered from Super SeaMaster twin turbo and intercooled gas engines to Cummins 6CTA M2 420hp engines that light off immediately. They ran great the whole way. I discovered some diesel in the bilge at the end of the journey and traced it to a loose injector nut. Presumably, the mechanic who sold me the engines loosened it to prime the system and didn’t snug it up quite enough. With the nut tightened up 1/6 turn, the leak stopped. That was the only issue. Not bad for a boat that hasn’t run on its own power since the 1980s.
Raw water flow was excellent. The dry-stack exhausts worked perfectly, though the water lift mufflers aren’t as quiet as I’d hoped. Still, it’s the quietest big boat I’ve owned.
The SMX Turbocator gauges indicated ~850Ā°F and 7.5psi at ~1850 rpm and 15.5 kts. I have to guestimate on the RPM because the OEM mechanical tachs were geared laughably wrong when they were restored. The restored OEM oil pressure and temp gauges are, likewise, very pretty but obviously displaying incorrect numbers, with oil at 120psi and temp at 110Ā°. BUT they were rock stable for the entire trip and they’re giving similar readings side-to-side. I suspect the original senders didn’t survive life on Purgatory Row of a southern Maryland boatyard for 30 years.
Anyway, I wanted to express my gratitude for all of the helpful information y’all provide. Without it, I suspect my trip would have been much more exciting, and I don’t mean that in a good way!
Links don’t seem to work on this forum, but here’s a short video of the trip. Delete the two hard returns and paste the link into a browser to see it.
