Aneriod Adjustment?
This topic has 12 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
February 27, 2024 at 7:05 am I have a pair of ’99 6CTA’s with 2,400 hours.Ā I’ve owned the boat for 13 years and these engines have been great.Ā But, on takeoff, the srtb engine shows some black smoke and needs a little more throttle than port to get the turbo to kick in.Ā It has always done this.Ā Once on plane, all good.Ā Just when getting on plane does this happen. I remember a “lazy Aneroid” discussion here, and thought this might be the ca…
12 RepliesApril 4, 2024 at 11:01 am Finally figured it. Turbo – leaking oil and sent out to Turbo Dave for new cartridge – result – brought boost up 10 lbs Turbo pipe gasket leaking after rebuild – found that and got a little more boost going where it was supposed to go. Rebuilt fuel pump was in the equation also – after confirming boost was back up, had to adjust the AFC a few more clicks to get it just right. Results – engines spool evenly and…

6CTA Primer Pump Leaks
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 6, 2023 at 10:36 am Hi, I have a ’99 6CTA with 2,400 hours.Ā While changing the on-engine fuel filter last weekend, the primer pump on the Bosch injection pump leaks when pushed, nor does it seem to pump fuel.Ā The engine seems to run normally, my question is can I run the boat this way for a while or is it “mission critical”. Thanks Larry

September 9, 2022 at 6:10 am Hi All,Ā Ā Boat is a ’99 Searay 450 express bridge with twin 6CTA’s with 2,400 hours. They are v-drives. Due to shaft alignment issues, I bought 8 new motor mounts from SBMar and paid a mechanic to install them.Ā In that process, the SW pumps had to be removed.Ā On the strb side, SW pump is outboard.Ā The motor mount under the SW pumps had to be cut out, so SW pump was removed.Ā They shoved a rag in the SW pump hole to keep debris fro…
23 RepliesOctober 10, 2022 at 8:16 am Dan, I did, and that hose is less than a year old.Ā Then I disconnected both intake hoses from the pump, then opened both engine’s seacocks to check water flow into the boat.Ā Both were equal.Ā Also, obviously I cleaned out the sea strainer and through hull. However, I am thinking about replacing that intake hose.Ā As mentioned above, they had to used grinders to remove the motor mounts.Ā I’m wondering is some of the hot sparks from …

6CTA Low Oil Pressure
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
August 21, 2022 at 11:21 am I have two 6CTAās in my boat (1999, 2400 hrs).Ā I just changed the oil 5 hrs ago (Rotella 15w-40, same oil Iāve been using in these engines for 11 years).Ā Oil pressure is always approx. 50 PSI for both engines (helm gauges).Ā Yesterday, strb engine went down to 20 PSI (verified with mechanical OP gauge on the engine).Ā Ā Engine runs as normal, no leaks, etc.Ā Low oil pressure alarm did not go off. Since the oil change, the oil in this engine has…

6CTA engine alignment
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
May 18, 2022 at 5:04 am Hi All, I need some help. Iām trying to finish a prop shaft/coupler alignment on my boat (ā99 Seary 450EB w/ Cummins 6CTAās, and they are v-drives). Iāve determined that the front end (fan belt end) of the strb engine needs to move inboard, probably just 1/8ā or so.Ā I have all the engine mount bolts loose, but canāt figure out how to scoootch over a 2,000 lbs engine.Ā The best Idea I have at the moment is to use a ācome alongā device attached t…
3 RepliesMay 29, 2022 at 1:39 pm Thanks for the help.Ā An update:Ā I used a come-along and a large C clamp attached to the opposite side stringer.Ā I was able to move the engine and improve the alignment, but I ran the boat this weekend and I still have the same wobble.Ā Either my alignment did not “take”, or there is something else going on.Ā FYI, I had the props, shafts, couplers pulled, ck’d and reinstalled, plus new cutless bearings and shaft seals.Ā It wa…

6CTA Oil Pressure Guage Hoses – Replace?
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
December 7, 2020 at 6:30 am Hi All, My engines are ’99 6CTA’s in a 45ft Searay. I’ve owned the boat for 10 years. 2,400 hours and no issues. I’ve done all the PM mentioned here and in the last 2 years have replace every hose & clamp on both engines (all parts came from SBMar). This weekend it occurred to me that the small oil hoses that go to the on engine oil pressure gauge are original. My question is how reliable are these hoses? Anyone …

Exhaust/turbo bolt broken – 6CTA
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
January 13, 2020 at 1:37 pm Hi All, I want to pull my port exhaust elbow just to check for issues, but one of the bolt heads has corroded and sheared off. The other bolt heads are also corroded to a point that a regular wrench is ineffective. (Seawater leak, since repaired.) There is no evidence of any exhaust leaks. What are my risks running the boat as is? Access is horrible, and it looks like the next option is grinder/cutoff wheel, and space for this is very tight …
4 RepliesJanuary 16, 2020 at 6:09 pm Good pics inside the exhaust turbo outlet will tell the story. Tony
