Ok so bought some barnickle buster and a new water pump impeller. I’ll try this first and report back  over weekend to see if it helps.

    IR Therm

Where is the best place on the engine to shoot an IR temp gauge to get the correct temp?  My gauges show 175 degrees, but oil pan is 195.  Both engines are the same.

195 deg F is too hot, regardless if you have a 180 tstat or a 160 tstat.  Many 6CTA’s have 160’s.  Sounds like you have a seawater circuit that needs some attention.  What is the detailed service history of your coolers: fuel cooler, gear cooler, aftercooler and heat exchanger?

As to your rpm inquiry:  What is your wide open throttle RPM when the boat is fully loaded with fuel, water, crew, passengers and gear?  Have your tachometers been verified so you know the accuracy of the RPM’s you are seeing?

For comparison we run our 480CE’s below 2300 for long runs(2220 – 2250).  Our long runs are around 5 hours or less.  That is about as long as the dog can handle the noise.  We try to break our long days up into segments and work a fuel/leg stretch stop in there.  We are in the Great Lakes where a warm water temp is 76F and we have the 160F thermostats.  So our engine temps stay a very nice 161Port 167Strbd.  You might consider backing off a bit and keeping the RPM’s below 2300 and look into the 160F thermostat.

I asked Tony a while back about sustained runs at 2300rpm 30gph fuel burn and he said it was possible but keep a very close eye on the engine temps and water flow.

We also have EGT gauges and ours are typically 725Fport/750FStrbd.  All of this is at our full cruise load.
