• Cummins QSC Timing Case Cover Oil Leak – Should I care?

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJohn 1 year ago

August 14, 2022 at 8:11 am Hello, Have this oil coming out the timing cover. Ā Not a large amount by any stretch. Wondering if this is indicative of a larger issue or just a plain oil leak around the timing cover that I can sort out at some point in the future. If gasket issue, is there a gasket to purchase or some type of preferred RTV or…? Any thoughts are appreciated. Ā Thank you as usual, J

    • Cummins QSC 8.3 540 – Thermostat Replacement

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJohn 1 year ago

July 16, 2022 at 8:18 pm Just doing research and didn’t easily come across any pics/threads on this process so figure I’d share some pics. Ā Probably none since it’s so easy but I took some pics. Drain Coolant (Mine drained a tad over 8 gallons), (4) 10mm bolts, (arrow part) when taking off was under a tad bit of pressure as when second bolt came out the elbow sprung a tad. Ā When replacing, it was a bit of a hassle to get the second bolt back in as took…

August 3, 2022 at 4:14 pm Good job and appreciate the pics – Thanks Tony. Ā What was the issue? Ā No issue but did this as part of sorting out another issue. Ā Engine temp creeping up at higher RPM (spun impeller hub thread). Ā Ultimately was a spun hub on impeller that caused temp issue but that motivated me to do HX and thermostat just to be sure there wasn’t something else going on. Did the replacement fix all? Ā I don’t think the thermostat was an issue…

July 16, 2022 at 9:46 am Posting in case helps anyone #1 – This impeller IS NOTĀ from SBMAR. Ā I did replace both impellers after this with SBMAR ones though. The other day noticed engine running hotter than normal (I saw it at 185), so throttled back and temp came down. Ā Did other checks, etc. but at 2050, ran 185 at 1,950 ran normal 172+-. Ran rest of day at lower RPM but eyeing temp. Ā Then on way into port increased RPM, 2,…

July 17, 2022 at 4:35 pm Finally got around to doing my HX and thought I’d doc in case helps anyone. It’s all pretty easy overall.Ā Close seacock, drain coolant, remove the 2 zincs, remove alternator & bracket (Easy), remove three bolts each end cap, loosen raw water pipe on the afterooler (Raw Water will pour out) that feeds the HX, remove the hose barb that the 1″ hose in front goes into in front of front cap, then you can slide core out for clea…

December 11, 2021 at 7:43 pm 1,000 hr – QSC 540’s ZF 285 A Listed out the data I pulled from the SmartCrafts at cruise and WOT. I note port engine a bit shy of WOT. Just had props done so will get it tweaked to get more RPM. Any thoughts on the difference or what they are showing? Manifold Temps, Gear Temps, Loads, etc.? Thanks in advance, J

April 13, 2022 at 8:15 am Just some suggestions: Higher fuel filter restriction from more contamination one side to the other so one filter collects moreĀ junk. Hoses degrading inside closing the pathway. Longer hose runs one side to the other. Partial kink in one hose.Ā Doesn’t have to be a full kink. More fittings such as elbows one side to the other. Tank vent on one tank has a bit more restriction from hose degradation, bugs clogging the vent, kink in the hose.

November 5, 2020 at 7:59 pm Thanks in advance for any help. ’05 QSC 540 – 2 weekends ago started her up, ran 15 secs, died. Odd, never happened before, never even a hiccup before then. Started up again, fine all day with several start and stops and long runs. This past weekend, fired her up in the morning to warm up for an oil change, ran fine, idled 10 mins or so, no problems. Shut her down to start oil change. Changed oil, fired her up as usual. Ran fine for …

November 6, 2020 at 4:17 pm When the displays go off with the engine, you’re losing direct ECM IGN power… Check the ECM power stud circuits thoroughly… make sure that the wires are run DIRECT to the batteries un-switched and the wires are fused and that the fuses are in good shape. Then, if those circuits look 100% I would look at the FireBoy as your main suspect… bypass it if possible and see if your problems go away…

July 27, 2020 at 3:18 pm Been adding to my cart what I think I need but stuck on some other items. AND I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT A LOT OF THIS, so asking some basic q’s. Thanks for your patience. I see the QSC fuel filter but many other types…do I care about anything other than 5488? Can someone tell me which ones? Are there other filters like coolant? Also, should I replace the coolant and does the coolant need to be replaced if doing the heat exchanger? Do t…

August 4, 2020 at 4:57 am Morning Tony, Thank you for the reply. Your concerns/observations are spot on as usual and come through loud and clear. I certainly wish these waters weren’t as uncharted for me as they are. As you suggest, I will be going through the entire seawater and cooling sides, which includes the aftercoolers and appreciate the tip on removing the oil line coming from the cooler. As for turbos, yep, no idea, but hope to know and learn more durin…

July 16, 2020 at 3:34 pm In a deal to buy ’05 35′ Cabo 540 QSCs 900 hours. Passed on a 8.3 480 CTAs based on some help from this board. Thank you. So just don’t know what to think. Not happy with the numbers but not sure if easily rectified or if that horrible. 4 ppl, Full 400 gal Fuel, Full 100 gallon water, a little chop when running. I’m certain (almost) the oil hadn’t been changed for 2 yrs and about 150 hours in that time. Guy said…

April 19, 2019 at 5:17 am First, love the forum and thanks to everyone who participates. Such great reads and info. Looking at two boats, one with a 2003 480 550 hours and the other with a 2006 QSC with about 1,000 hrs. Both seem to have been maintained evenly and are clean. I know about the 480’s 23 gph rule at 2,200 RPM and the turbo and aftercooler don’t show the extreme discoloration you can see in some pics on this site. Don’t know much about the…

April 19, 2019 at 3:23 pm Thank you Rob… No pics, sorry. Both motors are generally clean and appear in good cond. The QSC is all orig. The 6CTA had the exhaust redone, adding a hump in it to prevent water ingestion and looks quite well done. J
