In a deal to buy ’05 35′ Cabo 540 QSCs 900 hours. Passed on a 8.3 480 CTAs based on some help from this board. Thank you.

So just don’t know what to think. Not happy with the numbers but not sure if easily rectified or if that horrible.

4 ppl, Full 400 gal Fuel, Full 100 gallon water, a little chop when running.

I’m certain (almost) the oil hadn’t been changed for 2 yrs and about 150 hours in that time. Guy said ran Rydlyme through all systems each year, which I believe. No idea about after coolers or heat exchangers though since nothing documented. All had proper coolant levels.

Stbd got to 2,580 / Port 2,540 and port gauge oil pressure was about 10 higher than Stbd.
Bottom clean, Props ok but leading edge here and there had couple small bends in it or small nick, some cavitation burn on them.

Lots of black smoke from starboard from throttle up but quickly dissipated. Also black soot under heat shield on each turbo. Boat started easily and ran without a problem, no issues, cruised 28kts at 2,050 and close to 35kts at WOT

Wondering if fixing the props, doing the aftercoolers and heat exchangers would help with WOT.

Any thoughts besides that I should plan to replace aftercoolers LoL?

Oh, also the data plate was gone from the starboard motor I think. Not painted over, just not there. Weird.

    Committed Now

Just a quick update – Thanks for the help.

I’ve pulled the trigger and bought it.

Now I need to buy parts to get her to a baseline. I guess I’ll start a new thread for that because I am a bit lost when it comes to buying some items from the website.

    Thank you again,

    J

    I have an 07ā€™ Cabo 35 with QSC8.3-540ā€™s so I know a little about the engines/boat.

Regarding the black smoke thatā€™s pretty normal when accelerating especially when slightly overloaded. Cabo delivered the boat propped correctly but Cabo also delivered the boat sans hard top and tower – nobody took the time to reprop the boats correctly. Basically your overpropped and that is supported by the coloring on the turbo output pipe. Not too bad but enough. Donā€™t worry about anything just get the props adjusted. Take the props to the prop shop get them repitched. Your goal is 2665-2685 which is the governor limit. If you hit that you will find all the fuel burn/rpm data will fall in line.

The air cleaners are a reflection of the exhaust leak at the turbo. The air cleaners will clean up fine. Usually new gaskets at the turbo to exhaust flange will cure the leak, in rare times the turbo or exhaust flange is crusted up or warped and the repair gets a little more costly.

The aftercoolers are most likely contributing to your black smoke on acceleration also. Plan for new coolers, and if the existing can be serviced (per the process detailed on this site) you will be ahead. Rydelyme is not a replacement for off engine servicing of the aftercooler.

Oil pressure will be lower on starboard engine due to the plumbing associated with the remote oil filter setup. They will still be within spec though.

Long story short both the props need to be repitched and the aftercooler serviced/replaced. This will take care of your black smoke, or at least lessen it significantly.

The air flitters cleaned or replaced and the exhaust gasket replaced and your all good.

That air filter may be contributing or fully responsible for black smoke.

    Some pics

Both readings were basically same and this is at 2,400. I know, so much more info to get but didn’t and now annoyed I didn’t. Just wasn’t sure how valuable to do it.

Turbo soot same on both engines and no data plate. Port serial no. 46472338
