    • Build a lift muffler

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated bydonald roth 1 year ago

October 24, 2022 at 11:26 pm Iā€™ve got a big in-line wet muffler, about 12ā€ diameter and easily 36ā€ long, 5ā€ in and out. Ā My take on it is that itā€™s so roomy inside that it does little to reduce sound level. Iā€™mĀ wondering about the feasibility of converting it to a lift muffler in hopes of making the exhaust quieter, adding a starboard side exhaust for North Sea style outlets. Ā <br />What I donā€™t know is if there are certain specifications that I need to follow in buil…

November 7, 2022 at 5:08 pm Please excuse my ignorance of terminology, is 3ā€x 3 or 3.5ā€ mean that the exit tube is 3 or 3.5ā€ off the bottom of the muffler? Ā  Ā  Also, I notice that all the commercial lift mufflers are quite short (vertically) , would making it taller make it quieter? Ā I found this drawing online that is just Ā what I want to replicate.

April 28, 2022 at 2:23 pm I need some small parts to complete installation of Kobelt controls, and Iā€™m Ā not getting support from my local dealer, so posting here in hopes of finding another source. Have emailed Kobelt directly, no reply. I need a chain kit for a 2091 control head, and two cable ends with pins for 33 cable. Any help is appreciated!

April 29, 2022 at 5:41 pm Thanks, Clark, I doubled down on the local distributor, and he finally agreed to order the parts. Ā He doesnā€™t keep any inventory, and doesnā€™t like to sell small orders, not real kosher, but theyā€™ve got us over a barrel here.

    • Timing gear cover

November 5, 2020 at 10:23 pm Iā€™m replacing the timing gear cover due to rust damage, having some difficulty identifying the part locally. Is the marine part same as the automotive? The parts house wants to know if the motor has a ā€œPā€ pump, I donā€™t know?. Can anybody shed some light on this? Motor is 180hp. 6BT. Cpl 2891 Thanks

    • Gear oil cooler upgrade

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 3 years ago

July 5, 2020 at 12:25 pm Iā€™d like to upgrade my motors gear oil cooler, as Iā€™m now experiencing external leaking on my second oem unit, obviously not designed to survive in the real world. Thereā€™s no zinc, and theyā€™re obviously thin metal. Iā€™ve got a 6 BT, 180 hp, with a TD 506 transmission, 1 1/4ā€ raw water hoses. The problem is selecting from the 30 some coolers offered in the catalog here!

    • Adding a helm

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bydonald roth 5 years ago

February 7, 2019 at 6:54 pm My boat has an old Hynautic steering system, from which the pressure can and relief valves have been removed with positive resultsā€”smoother operation with less effort to turn the wheel. Iā€™m now installing a second helm station at the transom, and wondering if I need to run a third line from the new helm back up to the reservoir? This type of helm pump does not have an internal reservoir, and a reservoir tank at the lower helm could not be vented…

February 12, 2019 at 10:29 pm Thanks, Iā€™ve been thinking it all through, and have also come to the conclusion that adding a second reservoir would not work, Iā€™ve got to run a third line forward to the reservoir at the high point of the system.

January 7, 2019 at 9:59 pm I enjoyed using the prop calculator on boat diesel, but havenā€™t subscribed there lately, anybody know where I could find a good online calculator?

    • Hynautic helm ID

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 5 years ago

December 21, 2018 at 3:24 pm Iā€™ve got a Hynautic helm pump that dribbles a bit from the shaft seal, which crumbled on disassembly, so I dont even have a sample part to match. The helm pump lacks any kind of ID plate or stamp, wondered if anyone was familiar enough with these items to identify it? Thanks!

    • EGT temps?

This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byBill Desmarais 6 years ago

June 1, 2017 at 9:32 am I put an EGT gauge on my 6bt cpl 2891 Cummins motor, and it works well, but I can’t find any guidelines as to what the readings should be. I am seeing less than 400 deg at idle 600 at 1500 cruise 700 at 1600 cruise Then a gradual rise to about 900 at wot, which is only for a few moments if at all. Coolant temp is very stable at right around 180, c…

June 4, 2017 at 5:45 am Don, I’ve had EGT senders and gauges on three of the five 6BTA 370s I’ve owned in two boats. The twin 370s in my 31 Blackfin were propped to 3100 WOT which is under propped for the engines and that is good. EGTs at cruise rpms averaged 825F-850F . These 370s had the factory 180F Tstats. The 31 Blackfin weighed in @ 16,000 lbs and is a beast to push through the water. My newest 370 is in a 25 foot lobster boat. This 370 has a SMX hi…

    • raw water pump gizmo

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bydonald roth 7 years ago

January 2, 2017 at 5:08 pm Just ran across an ad for an item called “Speedseal Life” , it’s an impeller cover with a teflon disc and Ā wingnuts, said to double impeller life, and make impeller changes less painful. I don’t have problems with impeller life, as I change them (Seamax) annually anyway, but I do run a single engine boat in some remote areas, known for their nasty conditions, so my interest in this gizmo is in the area of making the pump …

January 4, 2017 at 5:36 pm Thanks for the replies, and yes, their website was a bit hokey! The O ring cover with thumbscrews is not a half bad idea though, sometimes getting a wrench in there along with a hand to turn it (blind) is asking a lot, and paper gaskets are too delicate to be using where you can’t see. Rob, I’m not a movie guy, I just like the word “gizmo”. I looked it up, and it means “An unspecified or unspecifiable object; someth…
