May 9, 2024 at 3:32 pm I have 6BTAs that ran 195-200 degrees. They were always within a few degrees of each other. Higher when FL water temps are elevated in the summer. For safety, I replaced my 180 degree stats with SMX 160 degree stats. Now one engine runs cold @ 140-150 and other hot @ 195-200. Impellers are new. Fuel coolers clean.  After coolers and trans oil coolers spotless. Just did heat X maintenance on engine running hot. Replaced antifreeze. Did exact same…

May 16, 2024 at 9:37 am “Ghost” pieces of impeller can hide in the raw water works, and even on the pump intake side.  <br />Have you looked inside the heat exchanger?  Broken off zincs can block flow there, and while there check the condition of the tubes.                                       Go through the entire raw water circuit from intake fitting to exhaust mixer.

May 6, 2024 at 8:32 am I have an early 6BT (CPL 742) in my 1987 Albin 36 trawler.  It’s been going through a refit for the past two years.  My wife and I just completed a 1,100-mile shakedown cruise to FL and back to our home in NC.  It’s always been a little smokey so I researched some possible causes.  The smoking is both on a cold start and after a day of cruising. I replaced all the old (probably original) 9mm injectors with new Cummins injectors (CPN …

April 4, 2024 at 10:12 am Took the heat exchanger off my 6bta to get cleaned. Going to reinstall it with all new hoses and found the pipe leading to the thermostat to be extremely rusted. Anything I should do for this issue? Or just flush remaining coolant as much as possible and fill with new?

April 8, 2024 at 11:57 am If you can, take a sample of the so called coolant and send it to an oil testing  lab.  Yes, they do coolant testing also. Heavy rust like that says you have had seawater enter the engine which could do interior damage. Pressure test the system for leaks. Remove as much rust as you can.    Then use a product such as Cummins cleaner,  RESTORE, following directions for treatment AND removal/flushing.   Be prepared to do it a couple of times.     R…

March 27, 2024 at 9:14 am Curious if there is any specification or guidance on tightening these hose clamps.  My impression is that the spring needs to have some give both to tighten and loosen to allow expansion.   Anyone have any advice vs just tightening them ‘tight’ like normal hose clamps.

April 2, 2024 at 7:43 am After all the items I tried, it turns out to be a simple fuel supply issue.  The fuel hose from the Racor to the fuel transfer pump had a major kink.  I’m sure this was self inflicted.  When I removed the fuel coolers I rerouted the fuel lines to make access to the water pump ect.. easier and created a sharp bend in the fuel line.  Oh well live and learn!

March 9, 2024 at 6:36 pm Can anyone recommend a good product to use for wiping down the engines/gears to prevent corrosion?  Battling some spot rust here and there with these big temperature changes this time of year in the south.   Maybe a good wipe down with some WD40 would help?

March 9, 2024 at 3:23 pm New to forum. Hope this question falls within the bounds. Have recently acquired a Nordic 44 with a 24v starter battery bank (two 12s in series) for a 600 HP, Cummins QSC 8.3L.  Recently, had an alternator failure while on a trip.  Replacement alternator (that a dockside mechanic put it in) was labelled 12V.  Was this an error?  Don’t I need a 24V alternator to charge my battery bank?     Thanks,   Michae

March 14, 2024 at 6:51 am The standard configuration for the Nordic Tug 44 has been 100% 24 volt since its inception about 10 years ago. (Update from the previous Nordic Tug 42). Of course these are highly custom boats so anything is possible. However, it is very likely to be a completely 24 volt system, including all engine and battery related items as well as lighting, appliances, etc.
