May 8, 2017 at 9:21 am In an effort to not ignore the basics, I’m posting these tips on replacing zincs. The aftercooler and heat exchanger zinc cap threads are 1/2″npt and the gear cooler zincs caps are 3/8″npt.Ā  Having taps of each size in your “zinc kit” is a good idea so you can chase those threads clean.Ā  Thread the new pencils onto your caps and snug them up you do not want them coming lose and banging up the tube ends of your coole…

April 27, 2022 at 5:44 pm I will chime in also. I Rectorseal #5Ā  the zinc threads themselves.Ā  Ā  Then I use pliers or a vise and a wrench to tighten the zinc into the cap.Ā  Ā Snug firmly onlyĀ  asĀ  the smaller ones can be weak and break if overtightened. Seals the threads so they are protected fromĀ  the seawaterĀ  Ā so they do not degrade, at least not untill the rest of the zinc is gone.Ā  Ā  That way they do not fall out of the cap. IĀ  then rectorseal the cap threadsĀ  for th…

    • Fresh water flush, 6bta 1 2

September 10, 2018 at 10:14 am Any reason why I couldn’t install a fresh water flush input at the bung on the SMX water pump. I seems to me that this would allow the fresh water (engine is off) to circulate past the impeller, through the entire system, and then down the exhaust. I do have the right elevations so that the exit water wouldn’t back up the wrong direction…

July 22, 2017 at 5:10 pm Cummins had to replace my QSB 5.9 engine and put a Recon in it this last week. All seems to be fine. They very nicely gave me a version 3 VesselView as I didn’t have one in the boat. We connected it for the sea trial and it all worked fine yesterday. Today, shortly after starting the engine I got the “sim no J39 data” error. When this occurs, don’t get any rpm reading, either on the VesselView or the original tachome…

May 15, 2019 at 5:42 pm I had this message on one engine yesterday after a complete battery change Was a blown fuse on the ECM. My engines are near new version 1 reco QSB5.9 380hp. It turns out there are 4 fuses on each engine, one more than the Cummins guy was expecting. Iā€™m told his attendance and troubleshooting is not under warranty.

July 18, 2017 at 5:05 pm 44′ Tollycraft. We removed the original BTA5.9 M2 engines and replaced with two QSB5.9 380 HO, ZF gears, and Smartcraft instruments. We reused the ZF/Mathers controls and added a 7″ display on the flybridge and two 4″ displays at the lower station. The alternators are now controlled by Balmar regulators, with the stbd engine charging the 1150 cca start battery and the port alternator charging the house bank. The port engine fu…

July 24, 2017 at 10:49 am Unless you have already eliminated this as a potential problem, I would recommend trying to disconect the Balmar controller on the alternator to see if that makes the problem go away.

June 9, 2017 at 6:28 am What size battery would be recommended for this engine? Currently, there is an AGM 8D in place and I would like to replace it with something smaller and lighter. At the very least it would be nice to replace it with two smaller batteries. This is a dedicated start battery and I’d like to know what is reasonably the smallest battery combination that will perform well. The battery is located in the ER and the boat is in the PNW. The temp…

However, often the Submit button disappears. Anyone else with this issue? I am primarily using Chrome, but had to switch to Internet Explorer in order to still see the submit button. • Installing Environvent CCV on QSB 5.9

May 26, 2017 at 3:37 pm This will likely go down as one of my typical stupid questions but… I am going to replace my existing Walker Air Sep with Seaboard’s Envirovent CCV. I received it but didn’t find any instructions. No problem, I knew there were some great photos on the website so I checked that out. I still have two questions. The first, is that the kit included one length of hose. I need two lengths of hose, one from the air filter and the …

June 2, 2017 at 11:44 pm I spent a couple hours installing this today. I am a slow and poor mechanic. Anyone with decent skills would have taken 15 minutes. I ran into a couple of surprises. The first was that the threads for the plug needed that Tony pointed out to me were 3/8′ npt. Fortunately, I had one handy. Secondly, I had some trouble with getting the new piece that connects the upper hose to the engine. The piece that was there from the Walker has an O…

February 18, 2017 at 2:21 pm i started the engine today after a bit of time without running, a couple months. Ā In the meant time the only thing that has been done to the engine was adding a pan heater and changing the zincs. Today the engine started up fine but was running extremely rough. It gradually smoothed out but now occasionally it will sound like it again seems to be fine. I don’t know engines at all so am at a loss. I will say that the Smartcraft display is r…

OK, so the problem went away when the mechanic disconnected the alternator. Taking the belt off helped some, but disconnecting the wiring from the alternator eliminated the problem altogether. The boat has had two charging setups for the start battery. A Blue Seas ACR that combines the house …

    • Cleaning air filters

May 1, 2017 at 6:13 pm I’ve searched thru the forums here, boatdiesel, and Tiara but struck out.Ā  Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have twin QSB 5.9 engines with cone shaped air filters that look like K&N linen filters used in cars.Ā  Should I just wash them in mild detergent and oil them with K&N oil?Ā  Or do I just replace them? Ā  At what interval?Ā  Thx. Ā Ā

May 13, 2017 at 9:15 am Thanks for the information. Ā Again, I learn something new, which is why I asked. I have no idea if/when the internal coalescing filter was changed. So far as I mentioned above, the gauge on the Airsep has not shown any restriction, but I think it is time to clean the filter just based on its appeara…

February 13, 2017 at 5:19 pm Cummins QSB 5.9L 380 engine.Ā  This boat is relatively new to me and I had the aftercooler serviced by a shop not too long after I took possession.Ā  At that time, the mechanic replaced the engine zincs when reinstalling the aftercooler.Ā  He ended up using some type of thread sealant on the threads.Ā  My question is basic, what type of thread sealant can be used if I find that the plugs leak at the specified torque?
