July 22, 2017 at 5:10 pm Cummins had to replace my QSB 5.9 engine and put a Recon in it this last week. All seems to be fine. They very nicely gave me a version 3 VesselView as I didn’t have one in the boat. We connected it for the sea trial and it all worked fine yesterday. Today, shortly after starting the engine I got the “sim no J39 data” error. When this occurs, don’t get any rpm reading, either on the VesselView or the original tachome…

May 15, 2019 at 5:42 pm I had this message on one engine yesterday after a complete battery change Was a blown fuse on the ECM. My engines are near new version 1 reco QSB5.9 380hp. It turns out there are 4 fuses on each engine, one more than the Cummins guy was expecting. Iā€™m told his attendance and troubleshooting is not under warranty.

    • QSB 5,9L 380 Start Battery

June 9, 2017 at 6:28 am What size battery would be recommended for this engine? Currently, there is an AGM 8D in place and I would like to replace it with something smaller and lighter. At the very least it would be nice to replace it with two smaller batteries. This is a dedicated start battery and I’d like to know what is reasonably the smallest battery combination that will perform well. The battery is located in the ER and the boat is in the PNW. The temp…

June 9, 2017 at 8:56 am Thanks Corey. That is very helpful. 2 x 24 are a whole lot easier to move than the 8D.

    • Installing Environvent CCV on QSB 5.9

May 26, 2017 at 3:37 pm This will likely go down as one of my typical stupid questions but… I am going to replace my existing Walker Air Sep with Seaboard’s Envirovent CCV. I received it but didn’t find any instructions. No problem, I knew there were some great photos on the website so I checked that out. I still have two questions. The first, is that the kit included one length of hose. I need two lengths of hose, one from the air filter and the …

June 2, 2017 at 11:44 pm I spent a couple hours installing this today. I am a slow and poor mechanic. Anyone with decent skills would have taken 15 minutes. I ran into a couple of surprises. The first was that the threads for the plug needed that Tony pointed out to me were 3/8′ npt. Fortunately, I had one handy. Secondly, I had some trouble with getting the new piece that connects the upper hose to the engine. The piece that was there from the Walker has an O…

    • QSB 5.9L running rough 1 2

February 18, 2017 at 2:21 pm i started the engine today after a bit of time without running, a couple months. Ā In the meant time the only thing that has been done to the engine was adding a pan heater and changing the zincs. Today the engine started up fine but was running extremely rough. It gradually smoothed out but now occasionally it will sound like it again seems to be fine. I don’t know engines at all so am at a loss. I will say that the Smartcraft display is r…

May 20, 2017 at 8:05 am For some reason the font color in the reply window is a very light gray so I can hardly see it. If anyone knows ho I messed that up, please let me know. OK, so the problem went away when the mechanic disconnected the alternator. Taking the belt off helped some, but disconnecting the wiring from the alternator eliminated the problem altogether. The boat has had two charging setups for the start battery. A Blue Seas ACR that combines the house …

    • dope on anode threads?

February 13, 2017 at 5:19 pm Cummins QSB 5.9L 380 engine.Ā  This boat is relatively new to me and I had the aftercooler serviced by a shop not too long after I took possession.Ā  At that time, the mechanic replaced the engine zincs when reinstalling the aftercooler.Ā  He ended up using some type of thread sealant on the threads.Ā  My question is basic, what type of thread sealant can be used if I find that the plugs leak at the specified torque?
