    • B series 300hp mechanical pyrometer limits

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 1 year ago

July 15, 2022 at 1:29 pm Does anyone know what the acceptable upper limit is for EGT reading on the 300hp B series engine?Ā  The probe is in the cummins exhaust elbow between the turbo exit and seawater injection. Engine topped out today at 2850 and had pyro readings of 800 and 850 while running at 2350 RPM.Ā  During yesterdays trip I noticed the one engine crept to around 875 while climbing swells.Ā  It seemed to be the same on way out (loaded) and on way in (minus 140 ga…

April 26, 2020 at 3:17 pm When recently starting my motor, I noticed a decent amount of what looked like zinc discharged out my exhaust. This surprised me as I had replaced the zincs in December and the boat has seen very little use. Upon warming the engine and oil, I changed fluids as part of routine maintenance. This is when I noticed the expansion tank level was a bit low (330 hp b series). At the time I didn’t think much of it as I have not needed to add wat…

May 18, 2020 at 4:13 am Eliminate the easy stuff – use a 110 tester on a twist lock adapter and test the dock tower. I keep this handy on the boat and whenever we are traveling I make it a habit of testing the tower before even bothering to drag out my cord….

    • b series aftercooler cleaning

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRoger bing 4 years ago

November 18, 2019 at 2:07 pm i recently serviced both my aftercoolers. after removing the core, I soaked air side in brake cleaner and hosed off. Next, I submerged core in barnacle buster to get the saltwater side clean. I just saw the cleaning instructions posted on the site that say to avoid acid on the air side… did i just trash the air side of cooler core by letting it sit in barnacle buster for ten-twenty minutes? I figured brass/copper is same on sw side and a…

November 23, 2019 at 7:44 pm thanks for the replies. not sure as to the era the cores were from, but they definitely looked like copper vs. aluminum. i ran the boat today no issues.

    • 300hp 5.9 steam in wet exhaust

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRoger bing 4 years ago

November 3, 2019 at 6:36 am So I noticed a bit of steam out my port exhaust when running the boat at 2250-2300rpm’s. All appeared normal with temps and pyros. I figured the water pumps were due for impellers so I started there. Turns out the port impeller was absolutely destroyed. Im embarrased to even post a picture as I should know better than to let it go so long prior to replacement (1300hrs). How the boat wasn’t in overheat is still a mystery to me. …

October 26, 2019 at 7:46 pm I have a pair of 330mhp, 5.9’s and did impellers for the first time today.. Needless to say, that “fuel maze” piping creates a total disaster when trying to get the impeller out and install a new one. In addition, my motors were rebuilds when installed and the aeroquip ends were never wrapped with the wax tape so they are pretty well rusted. Im estimating new hoses (despite them being short) will be a couple hundred bucks a m…

October 8, 2019 at 6:30 pm I just did injectors on a 825hp series 60 for a friend of mine. Barred engine over and set injector heights accordingly (81mm) after installing unit injectors. Note motor was guaranteed to be in correct position at this time as valves were exactly where i set them during tune up in april. In addition, each injector had to come down. I attributed this to new springs. Boat had run over 100hrs since tune up flawlessly. Upon testing boat toda…

October 26, 2019 at 7:31 pm sorry for the late reply. in our travels since my last post, i actually found a cracked exhaust manifold. which was welded and replaced. apparently the #1 hole on the manifold was a problem on the marinized 60’s . detroit even added an additional fresh water feed to the front of the manifold in an update as they were not circulating well in the front end of the motor. yes tony…. the 825hp is a 12.7L. I agree with you and told …

    • ONAN Generator Issue

This topic has 11 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 4 years ago

June 4, 2017 at 5:57 am I have a 4kw onan MDK genset. Last fall I had to replace the pan and had no luck finding an onan part. Long story short, I found the KUBOTA pan that ONAN had marinized and installed it. Only difference is I now have to drain the pan through the dipstick. The pan dimensions were the same as I placed them side by side and compared. Fast forward two months. First trip out was in February, a flat calm day. Generator runs great all day. Secon…

December 18, 2016 at 1:22 pm going to do install this week and am going to order fittings.. I looked at the pics of the taps on this site. Looks like the supply in the turbo blank on manifold Ā is 3/4″ pipe thread and the return by water pump suction is 1/2″ pipe . Ā Could someone confirm these pipe sizes? I don’t work with pipe a lot. Also the vent from the turbo blank to the exp. tank. Ā What pipe size is that?
