March 9, 2021 at 9:45 pm Installing 370hp 6bta. In a 28′ 8-9k lb planning hull. Thanks in advance! #1. Am I safe to delete the fuel cooler? Holds 120 gallons. Generally my longest straight through run is 3 Hrs then back to idling and fishing. I do burn the tanks down to 25% on trips. #2 Straight run 8′ length of wet exhaust. 6″ or is 5″ safe? #3 6lp used 1.5″ shaft with 2/1 gear and 19×22 prop. 370 will be 1.5/1 gear and likely a 20/24…

But yes,, the tank need to be the ā€œHIGHEST part of the cooling system when running on planeā€™ā€™ Is this a hard and fast rule? I have space limitations restricting me to either 6 inches below the top of the HX or 12 -15 inches above it.

March 1, 2021 at 8:49 pm Hello all, If anyone is interested in seeing this engine swap process happen pop in here and leave a comment. If this kind of thread isn’t wanted here feel free to delete it. If there is any interest I will post progress pictures, surely ask lots of questions, and hopefully share documented information on the conversion. (I am an uneducated welder please excuse my bad wording, run on sentences, and bad typing). My Yanmar is a great engin…

    • Yanmar 6lpa-stp 315 Correct engine coolant??

May 11, 2020 at 9:32 am Hello all, Thank you in advance as always for the wealth of information here. Sourcing parts to change my timing belt on 6lp. I decided I should change the coolant since they are so coolant sensitive and I need to pull the crossover pipe anyway. This lead me down the current bunny hole as to what coolant is correct. It seems Yanmar’s approved coolant list is extremely dated and based off Asian companies that are mainly out of business now …

November 21, 2020 at 3:14 am This might be a little late, but perhaps still help someone. I use Prestone Extended Life Coolant. It is orange in colour.I get it easily here in Barbados, so would imagine it is readily available where you are. I have a 2005 6LPA-STP in an Albin 28, with 7200 hours. I put on about 2,000 hours a year, and change it on my annual haul up when we change the timing belt.

October 3, 2020 at 6:55 pm Hello guys, I bought this old junk boat for this pair of 2004 -2005 qsb 380ā€™s. These have been sitting for 4 years and have not been well protected from the weather. They will need lots of love and rust removal and paint .Both engines turned over slowly with a jump box so i bought them. Boat is now in my yard and Im attempting to get them running before i pull them. Exhaust are nice and high but still prone for failure. Engine #s 46417783 464850…

October 6, 2020 at 7:10 pm Tony, 1.The ship has clearly sailed on the baring them over part! Should I still rig up a pump and filter and circulate oil for 30 minutes? Even though I have cranked them a bit? I also left out a critical detail that previous ā€œ mechanic or potential buyerā€ did start atleast one engine on silicone spray. I donā€™t know if they started the one with the bad starter or not. 2 Would two new group 27 batteries hooked up in series suffice instead of a …

September 10, 2020 at 7:11 am Hello all, Kind of at a turning point here with my 6lp 315 yanmar. Debating between repairing the old yammer or deciding which Cummins to install. It has 5500 hours. Here is my list of yanmar issues or things needed currently has a rust pin hole in the bottom of the oil pan, Also has an exhaust leak either in the elbow or in the exhaust housing, Injection pump and lines are quite rusty and will definitely be an issue down the road in coming yea…

September 16, 2020 at 8:22 pm Thanks Rob, i will take a look at that as soon as i get back in there. Seems like it is in the spray pattern of the raw water pump when it failed with previous owner. That plug would be a nightmare if it started spraying 100 miles into the bahamas.

March 11, 2020 at 8:52 pm Hello again guys. My buddy is replacing his charter boat with a larger one and gave me a very fair offer to buy it. I currently run a similar hull with a 250 cummins. I am nervous of the Yanmar 6LPA-STP 315. It has 5300 hrs. since rebuilt. It ingested water when it was nearly new @1000 hours. He has owned it for about two years and 1500 hours or so. Fluids and filters changed regularly. Exchanger and after cooler have not been serviced since he …

April 5, 2020 at 8:50 am If the boat is “a hard to get up on type hull”, dark transient acceleration smoke can be normal.. Doing the aftercooler is always a good thing to do every 2 years or so if the engines sit with saltwater is them..

    • Questions regarding prop tuning on 6bta M1 250hp

July 20, 2019 at 4:47 pm Hello you all, as always I am super grateful for all the information and time you knowledgeable guys invest here. This is a 7k lb 28′ sea vee center console with 6bta 250 M1 cpl 1570. Like a dummy while loading my boat on the trailer I hit the prop on the trailer bunk. And obviously bent the ends of the wheel. While at the local very well regarded prop shop (Bobby Soles). He wanted to run numbers to reprop the boat because the current pro…

July 31, 2019 at 9:14 am Thank you again Tony! More questions I have read the tachometer calibration chart on here. Just set the open and closed dip switches according to the chart or do you sometimes have to play around with different combinations? Reason I ask is I pretty much have to sit on the turbo to adjust it. https://www.sbmar.com/articles/beede-tach-settings-cummins-flywheel-tooth-count/ Also currently I only have .25″ max between the prop and the hull wi…

July 5, 2019 at 9:29 am Thank you all in advance. I have been reading endlessly. And havent found my answer yet. Ok guys I’m having an overheating problem with my 250hp cummins. Cpl # 1570. It has been running 191 degrees @2300 rpm and 195 degrees @ wot about 2850 rpm. Any low rpm below 1200 it hangs around 180 -185. I verified the gauges accuracy with a IR. Temp Gun. I found 190 and 194 degrees. Since I bought it a few months ago I have replaced the following it…

July 14, 2019 at 8:03 pm Just wanted to thank you guys. We finally got to put some hours on this boat and enjoy it Saturday. Ran about 130 miles round trip to West End same day. Everything seemed good. temps held @ 191 @ 2300 and coolant after cooled down seems to be @ the exact levels. I will get the Jwac serviced after summer break. And will order 160 Tstat with my next order as well. It can’t hurt in my eyes. I did how ever hit the prop on the trailer bunk pull…

May 23, 2019 at 11:33 am Hello everyone, You all and the forum are a wealth of information! Im new to marine diesels and feel I am getting exhaust in my coolant. I have flushed coolant many times running water currently and still comes out brownish black after a little run time above 1700 rpm. I replaced the radiator cap because it wasn’t building pressure. Now I can cold start then engine bring up the throttle around 2k rpms. and the coolant hoses become pressuri…

June 28, 2019 at 10:33 pm Bought a photo tachometer off amazon. Im not certain of its accuracy. Wot no load it reads approx 2920 rpm while the tach reads 2600. What is the no load rpm limit? I read for a similar cpl 220 hp engine was 2912 rpm Is this correct for my cpl as well? I spent some time combustion testing the cooling system as I am suspicious of exhaust in coolant still. I didn’t test under load since its on the trailer atm. Passed that test so far. Curio…

May 4, 2019 at 9:08 am Hello Gentleman, This forum is absolutely great. I have been reading piles of info. Learning alot. I have a 1997 Sea Vee with 250 Hp 6bta m1. ESN# 45388094 and Cpl# 1570. The coolant pump is bad. This pump looks identical to the pumps in my 6b trucks. Can I just get a pump from the local parts house instead of waiting on shipping?
