    Hello all,
If anyone is interested in seeing this engine swap process happen pop in here and leave a comment. If this kind of thread isn’t wanted here feel free to delete it. If there is any interest I will post progress pictures, surely ask lots of questions, and hopefully share documented information on the conversion.

(I am an uneducated welder please excuse my bad wording, run on sentences, and bad typing).

My Yanmar is a great engine with 5500 hours. But was neglected and needed a paint job and a few rusty parts replaced. Mainly the oil pan. I am tired of paying yanmars parts prices and I just prefer the 6b. 6Lp and vf63a gear are verbally sold to an acquaintance.

Boat is a 28′ Whitewater center console very similar to a seavee. I pulled the Yanmar out a few months back and had to wait for the engine seller to be ready to do his outboard conversion ( 32 Luhrs getting trip or quad 400 mercs).

Engine: Both data plates are painted or have a rebuild sticker over it so I don’t know the cpl’s or serial numbers yet. Finally got both of the 370 6bta’s out which had 2000 hours and one was recently “rebuilt”. They both are cosmetically neglected and need complete exterior once over. The price for the pair seemed too good to be true (core value approximately) so we shall see how it goes. Had great high dry risers so both turbos look great in there. I chose to use the recently rebuilt engine in my boat. It cold started better than the other one with less smoke. Neither engine had any noticeable blow by. Pulled the aftercooler and to my shock it was greased up and both core and housing looked great under a few sloppy coats of paint! I had it cleaned and pressure tested anyway also had the heat exchanger done.

New gear is a 220a 1.52 ratio i believe. Was told it was replaced with the engine rebuild and it was unpainted so that seemed plausible or likely. Old shaft is 1.5″ and worn badly at the drip less seal area and strut bearing. Previous owner used what seems to be a plastic type strut bushing and didn’t have proper raw water pressure to the dripless seals. So it will likely need a new shaft. Idk if we will use 1.75″ or got back with 1.5″.

New parts: Since I didn’t have to dish out big money for an engine i figured I could splurge on the install goodies. Ordered Smx rw pump, 160 degree smx tstat, smx digital display with egt, boost, nmea, new smx engine harness and extension, also an envirovent setup. For a start. Installer will provide new mounts, starter, alternator, gear cooler, and hoses. We will also pull the gear and check the coupler. Im hoping it got a new coupler when the new gear was installed but who knows. Also will inspect or replace any seal that is moist or hard to get to ( rear main, tappet cover etc).

Install: I am swamped at work (welder) and have never done an inboard engine install, alignment, mount beds etc. So I have chosen to have a well known cummins guy do the install for me. It will be expensive but if I do it I will likely waste all summer learning instead of fishing. So I think this is the best decision since Bahamas crossing season is approaching fast.

Custom stuff during install: I know I will have to fabricate a custom riser or have one built. I may even need to do a top mount turbo setup for necessary clearance and true lwl height. I want to be able to engine off flush without any thoughts. Boat will also need the current 4″ exhaust cut out and either 5 or 6″ installed. Obviously 6″ is ideal I just don’t know if it will fit.
If you have any input feel free to chime in. Am I missing anything critical?

    Questions.
#1 When doing a top mount turbo setup does the coolant tank need to be relocated higher up to avoid air in the top of the turbo?

#2 What size raw water input do I need? I think the yanmar had either 1.75″ or 2″.

#3 Should I pony up for the gear temp and pressure sensors while I am at it? I have never had them in the past. Maybe an oil change hose for the gear as well?

Make this all tad simpler. Make a new post with just your specific questions in a 1, 2,3,4 type format.

Keep it simple so it is simple to answer.

    Q. #4 Can i delete the fuel cooler in this setup? Boat holds 120 gallons? I frequently run it down to 1/4 tank on trips. I understand that once i have the engine installed i can check temps and determine if i need to add one later. Hoping someone has a cheat answer for me.

Got the hull all cleaned up and got all the oil leak and stains out. And paint job would be nice but it will have to be next time. Ready to go to the installers!
