March 7, 2023 at 1:37 pm In in the process of cleaning and testing the gear oil cooler on my 2002 Cummins 6BTA 5.9 370 engine. The cooler in the picture may be from SBMAR but I don’t know. What are the consequences of dezincification in a gear cooler? How can I tell if dezincification has occurred?

March 9, 2023 at 1:51 pm Sorry for the confusion… There is a place for two zincs. In the picture there is a modified zinc plug holding a shrader valve and the other one has a pressure testing port.

    • What is a good 6bta 370 compression value?

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 5 years ago

April 12, 2019 at 1:25 pm I just had a compression test on on cold engine after having the valve lash adjusted. The engine has run 4000hrs. These are the values 1:300psi 2:325psi 3:295psi 4:300psi 5:310psi 6:310psi Are these low, medium, high? They are fairly equal and I know that’s good. Should I be thinking about a rebuild or is all OK? Your help would be appreciated.

April 14, 2019 at 8:44 am Compression tests are really not a secret, they are just not published as they are not a valid test on cylinder condition…Why you ask??..Real simple.. Just the speed of the RPM during cranking affects it to too much. The amount of oil on the bores affects it too much….The block & oil temp affects it too much…..From the practical stand point, to me they are just used as a comparison between cylinders..Yours are close enou…

    • Proper Hose Clamp Size

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 5 years ago

December 23, 2018 at 9:30 am What are the standard rules, best practices, for using hose clamps. All stainless steel I know. When should constant torque clamps be used? When should two clamps be used back to back? How much band overlap should there be (what size should be used)? Any special clamps for the material/composition of the hose like using a linear clamp? Any special clamps or considerations for the type of material passing through the hose (air, freshwater, seawat…

December 24, 2018 at 10:33 am Nutdriver tight on worm gear clamps is all I have done for decades. Weā€™ve covered this a few times by now. Do a few searches. For sure one using ā€œnutdriverā€ as search term and then for a tool purchase if you wish search ā€œvalve wrenchā€

    • Wet elbow and turbo

This topic has 8 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byJustin Riege 5 years ago

November 26, 2018 at 8:56 am I decided to take off the wet elbow and inspect it and the turbo. I have 4100 hrs on the engine. I’m not sure what I should be looking for and decide what I should do on the basis of the inspection. I’ve never been happy with the alignment of the heat exchanger and the wet elbow (see pics). I’m not sure what I can do about this alignment or a better shaped hose. What should the inside of the wet elbow (DeAngelo brand) look like…

November 28, 2018 at 10:35 am Walter, The way I see it you have three issues with the current design. 1. Your water line is too close to turbo height 2. The mixing elbow is not really pointed downward enough and mixing elbows on the turbo in general just put salt water too close to the turbo to begin with 3. the spill-over of your muffler is much higher than the spill-over of your engine exhaust See attached pic. If you are interested in getting serious about doing someth…

    • Impeller Shredded

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

November 30, 2017 at 3:00 pm After 85hrs since the last impeller replacement it totally shredded. Is there a reason for this? Which is worse on wear, time passage or hours of use? I flushed out the aftercooler by sticking a dock hose in the top zink hole.Water came out but little if any debris. When I pulled out the old impeller stump no other parts fell out and when I ran my hand around the inside of the pump I didn’t feel anything unusual. Installed a new impeller …

Has the intake under the boat been inspected? No impeller parts fell out….Okay, but they are somewhere for sure. Either backflowed into your inlet hose or pushed into the fuel cooler or bottom aftercooler cap. Yes bump the engine with the pump coverplate off to verify the pump is spinning. Take out the impeller and…

    • Twin Disk 5050SC temp and pressure senders

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 6 years ago

October 6, 2017 at 8:39 am My boat has a Twin Disk transmission 5050SC connected to a Cummins 6BTA 5.9 370HP engine. The instruments harness has wires for a transmission pressure and temperature senders but the senders were never installed. Does anyone know what temperature and pressure sensors should be installed and where they are connected to the transmission? The information will be connected to a NEMA2000 analog to digital converter for display on a multifunction dis…

October 6, 2017 at 5:11 pm Walter, You will not like the answer I am going to offer you.. I have nothing in my data base to refer to on that Twin Disc Model.. As to Twin Disc support–What you have found out is why I try and stay away.. Very poor support overall… I wish I had a better answer.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just took a chance with GOOGLE.. I found this bulletin…. This is a Gear that will have full Gear pressure on the oil line going to &a…
