July 13, 2023 at 2:20 pm Just replaced the stbd turbo drain line on my 1999 Cummins 6BTA 5.9 M3 330 HP, and while running the engine to check for leaks noticed that I had ATF leaking out from the transmission’s filter cap.Ā  No leaks on the drain line – yippee for that. Quick check of the repair/parts manual had me grab my 6mm Allen wrench and get into a boat yoga position to tighten the cap.Ā  That didn’t help (it was already ‘closed to the stop&#…

January 11, 2022 at 1:44 pm Thanks Mike … I’ll take a look at my current ignition wiring and see if I can figure out the two wire solution.Ā  I’ll probably put in a ‘cut off switch’ also (or just use and empty aux switch on the dash) for a bit of added ‘security’ – though I figure someone who wants to steal the boat will just hot wire it anyway.

    • 1999 6BTA 5.9 M-3 (older style) Heat Exchanger replacement

This topic has 7 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byPaul 4 years ago

October 1, 2019 at 9:08 am Was seeing signs of the heat exchanger going over the last few month (expansion tank level, engine temps creeping up) and when the alarm started sounding after running at high RPMs after about 5 minutes (temps creeping above 200F) I knew it was time to pull it. Of course it’s the starboard engine, so the heat exchanger is outboard, real PIA to take out. Soaked it (estimate about 1/3 of tubes with at least some blockage) and then pressure …

November 8, 2019 at 1:45 pm Life, even when retired, intervenes and stops you from getting to the boat, doing work, and then doing sea trials to make sure everything is good to go. So, after a long delay I can report the HE in, dock and sea trials completed SAT and temps stayed right at 175F-180F through a 20 minute WOT run (lots of race tracks). I take the ‘do the after cooler’ comments to heart, and as mentioned, they’re in the budget (at least as pla…

    • 1999 6BTA 5.9 M-3 – Change from Alternator to Mag Tach pick up?

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

September 15, 2019 at 3:16 pm One of the things I dislike about my engines is the inaccurate rpm readings I get. My engines have the Bosch alternator tach set up and wonder if I can ‘switch’ over to a magnetic pickup feed for my tach gauges (I’d replace the gauges if necessary) using https://www.sbmar.com/articles/install-magnetic-pickup-drive-tachometer/

September 18, 2019 at 6:45 am If you go for it, just run a 14-2 boat wire from the mag pick-up area to the dash for each engine.. That way you’ll get a clean impulse signal for each tach and also then have the option for digital tachs. Your flywheel has 159 teeth. Beede Tach Settings & Cummins Flywheel Tooth Count Adding and extra 14-2 for each allows you to also add redundant alarms down the road if you even want that. Tony

August 12, 2019 at 3:03 pm Went to check transmission fluid level today – Haven’t been out much in the last two months so it’s been a while, but only about 10 engine hours worth of time has passed. April 6, 2019 at 4:38 pm Think it’s time to call around and get a professional diesel mechanic out to the boat. If you were following my other thread you saw that my stbd 1999 330 HP 6BTA 5.9 M3 fried the fuel solenoid. Port engine working fine. My solenoid (original) was obsolete of course and the replacement I’ve gotten from the local Cummins distributor doesn’t fit. • Chasing down jumpy gauges – protecting connections.

September 19, 2018 at 6:49 am 1999 Cummings 6BTA 5.9 M-3. I’m chasing oil gauge issues on both engines. At low RPMs (<1,000) no issues, all gauges indicate rock steady. When pushing up to say 2,000 one or both gauges will start to swing erratically, and eventually fall to zero. This typically leads to an engine alarm in a few minutes (though not always – not sure why). Jogging the throttles to bring RPMs up and down tends to bring the gauges off the zero,…

September 23, 2018 at 11:58 am Watching some engine maintenance/troubleshooting Youtube videos I’ve become jealous of a couple of things. One – man, some folks have big engine rooms – they can easily get to both sides of their engines. I have to lay/crawl between the fuel tank and the engine to get to the outboard side of the engine (can’t be done with a hot engine). Two – Saw an engine room that had a fuel system management manifold. The man…

    • Reading my engine specs sheet

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byPaul 5 years ago

August 21, 2018 at 8:46 am My engine’s (Cummins 330B 6BTA 5.9 M-3) spec sheet has graphical and tabular data for fuel consumption. The graph has two curves (a rated curve, and a propeller curve) and the table lists values for only the propeller curve. I’m assuming (and rough calculations hold out) that using the propeller curve is the best way to estimate fuel burn for voyage planning. Am I correct? Thanks, as always, in advance.

August 26, 2018 at 7:19 pm Thanks Rob … yes, propped correctly (24x26x4) and I easily get to 2,800-3,000, but always back it down after about half a minute to ~2,600 so I don’t push too hard for too long. Plane just over 2,000. Prop curve does make the most sense from what I’ve been seeing in fuel usage. Not really trusting tachs right now, they really jump around, and even though I can ‘synch’ the engines by ear, the two meters are nowhere…

July 26, 2018 at 3:12 pm Finally found the tag on one of my transmissions (gear boxes). A Google search didn’t turn up more than a simple chart showing gear ratio, power and torque specs. I’d like to get a better feel for the maintenance routine for them. A operator/maintenance/repair manual would be nice. August 5, 2018 at 4:35 pm Yes, that reservoir is for throttle and shifter. Steering has it’s own reservoir up at the helm by the steering wheel. Suggest to add fluid and air pressure to what is shown in your pic. Might have to “bleed’ the lines if have air trapped in the hydraulic hoses. I have the original manual for it if you need specific info. Probably on-line also. Good luck.
