Again, thanks for the add.  I’ve been lurking and doing a lot of forum and Tony’s Tip reading – I have twin Cummins 330’s 6BTA 5.9 M-3 in a 1999 Maxum 4100 SCA that are running great right now (knock on wood), but I know I’ll be asking questions about them in the future.  Now onto my question.

I know this is a long shot – but figure there are experienced people here that might be able to help. I have a Westerbeke 8KW generator.  It runs fine, I change the oil and coolant, but I don’t know what model it is, and would like to know because eventually I’ll need to know to replace something.

I looked all over the motor and generator and couldn’t find any obvious markings – granted it’s tough to do with the sound box around it. Westerbeke’s site lists four 60Hz models – 8.0WMD, 8.0 BTD, 8.0 BTDA and 8.0 BCDT.

I took a bunch of pictures and put them in an Imgr album that I’d appreciate an experience eye taking a peak at and maybe spot something obvious.

    Thanks in advance.

    No hour meter

    Glenn,

No hour meter on mine … switches on the panel itself (upper left of AC) & temperature, oil pressure and output voltage, but no hour meter.

Just saw this question. Have a remote generator panel by the main power panel (AC and DC circuits). Has all the start, by-pass, stop switches and Temp, Volts and hour meters.

    BTD it is …

Went through a box of water soaked (they were in a cardboard box, in the bilge when we bought the boat) and found (‘water welded’ between a stack of other papers) a BTD manual, so that seals the deal on what type it is.

I can ā€œseeā€ the Westerbeke Gen-Set Tag on your last pic. of your albumā€¦.right below the exhaust hose. Itā€™s black borders with white boxes.

Checked that tag yesterday – just the California emission tag. Weird that my generator end is ‘exposed’ unlike yours, but it looks like the sound box is mounted to the gen through the same bolt holes that your ‘cover’ is attached.

Another dumb question … is there an hours meter hooked up on yours anywhere?

A sister boat? The questions will be flying now.

Wow, talk about ‘sister’ boats – you Sir have just set yourself up for a ton of questions coming from this tadpole.

I can ā€œseeā€ the Westerbeke Gen-Set Tag on your last pic. of your albumā€¦.right below the exhaust hose. Itā€™s black borders with white boxes.

Good eye Glen – I’ll take a closer look at that when I’m onboard next time.

Quick question, have you or PO had to change out the Port gear box? Iā€™ve had the boat since 2004 and do almost all the work myself. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Unfortunately I can’t answer that. The two PO’s didn’t leave any maintenance logs and while I’ve tried to communicate with the most recent PO, through our broker, he has never returned a call or e-mail I sent – I gave up after a year of trying.

Keep your head down and watch out for all those airedales buzzing over head. Last time I pulled out of Pensacola – JAN 2003 – it was snowing.

I can “see” the Westerbeke Gen-Set Tag on your last pic. of your album….right below the exhaust hose. It’s black borders with white boxes.

Hi Paul, the Pic of your gen set that shows all the exposed wires/transformers/connectors, etc of the power generator is covered on mine and that is where the model tag is located.

Hi Paul, I have the EXACT same boat – Maxum SCA ’99 with 330’s and Westerbeke 8K. In fact, I’m on the boat now in Pensacola. Mine is not sound shielded and the Model is 8.0 BTD/32984. I suspect this is common for that year with the 41′ Maxums. The 46′ had the 12 KW, I believe. The information tag for my gen set is located on the right side of the actual power generator itself as you look from the front of the gen set.

Quick question, have you or PO had to change out the Port gear box? I’ve had the boat since 2004 and do almost all the work myself. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

    Thanks Philip

Thanks Philip … I’ll check next time I’m on board. Quick look at this image doesn’t seem to show one, but it could just be the angle of the shot.

Usually there is a metal tag on the front of the electrical control box noted by the blue arrow in the attached photo. That tag should have your model number info.
