    • 160 VS 180 ThermostatĀ in 6BTA 5.9 M3

February 14, 2021 at 11:17 am Looking for advice at to whether I should stick with the 180 or change to the 160. I’ve read the article and would change to a 160 if I ran off-shore, get the protection factor from the additional prevent alarm at 190. Here are my current boating conditions: Most trips are 15 to 20 minutes cruising before I drop lines, some times less. Max cruises 45 minutes, which I do more just to ‘run’ the boat under a load. Troll a lot,…

February 6, 2024 at 12:01 pm My experience w/the 160 t-stats in 6bta 370s was meh.Ā  Yes, it ran cooler, but too cool at idle/trolling speeds.Ā  They start opening close to 140 which is just too low.Ā  Maybe I got a couple odd balls but they were both exactly the same. Keep the cooling system up to snuff, have an alarm that works, and pay attention.

    • Tach issue on 6BTA 5.9 – 1996

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byClark Leighs 1 year ago

August 15, 2022 at 1:45 pm Having an issue with my Star Board tach, getting progressively worst each time out.Ā  Won’t read at start up, but would start reading at 800 rpms, then read at slow idle (600 rpm’s) once warmed up.Ā  Now it’s not reading till I hit the throttle to put the boat on a plan. The port engines has the Dual Output Magnetic Pickup Speed RPM Sensor (TACH) (2 sets of connections).Ā  The port has the single output magnetic pickup.Ā  Ā Does thi…

August 22, 2022 at 5:52 pm This is just general. Make sure that the wiring , at sender AND at the guage,Ā  is tight and free of any corrosion.Ā  Even light oxidation can interfere.Ā  Ā  Make sure the guage itself is receiving full 12 v.Ā  Ā  Ā It is not just the ground wire but all of it.Ā  Poor voltage to the guage will produce poor results. Check the sender.Ā  Ā I am assuming you have one at the back of the engine which reads the flywheel teeth as they whiz by when the engine is …

    • Magnetic pick-up/Tach trouble shooting

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byCorey Schmidt 3 years ago

April 21, 2021 at 5:18 pm Hello, Looking for some advice/next steps to trouble shoot my port tach issue. The tach started working less each time out last season. Usually would start working when going up on a plane, then would start working at lower speeds trolling after running for a while. I’ve read thru the How To Install a Magnetic Pickup to Drive a Tachometer. Removed the Magnetic pick up, reinstalled as instructed. No luck, it was a little damaged on the …

    • SMX Analog Instrument Panel Alarm Circuit Board question

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 3 years ago

September 1, 2020 at 7:53 am Replaced the Analog Instrument Panel Alarm Circuit Board 6 weeks back. Old alarm board buzzer did not shut off after starting. The new one is fine at start up and cruising, but a couple times I’d get a ‘Chirp’ from the alarm board after coming down off a plane to idle/trolling speed. So I’d just disconnect the purple ignition wire, since the temp gauge and oil pressure seem fine. Is the ‘Chirp’ sound a p…

    • Fuel Solenoid check for Low Power issue 6TBA 370hp

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byMike Uliasz 3 years ago

July 14, 2020 at 1:29 pm Been reading thru LOW POWER / LOW RPM AND NO DARK SMOKE trouble shooting steps. Looking for guidance on next steps. The fuel solenoids on both my engines are staying fully extended at full throttle (motor off). I can push the solenoid into the retracted position by hand. Had mechanic inspect the engines at purchase, said throttle cables are stretched and it was not hitting WOT. Should fuel solenoid retract the fuel level incrementally as the th…

July 15, 2020 at 11:11 am Rob, Thanks. Read the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Wiring 101 writeup and its making sense. Answer’s my question and another question when we were having issues starting the motor after the raw water pump/fuel cooler removal. My buddy ended up grounding the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid like mentioned in the article after reinstalling. So next question ‘throttles up to the stops’ or ‘throttles not hitting the stops’. I’…

    • Replacing Raw pump and fuel cooler is off

This topic has 13 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byMike Uliasz 4 years ago

February 10, 2020 at 8:14 pm In the process of removing old raw water pump and we had to take the fuel cooler off to get to the 2nd water pump bolt due the generator being pigeon toed in between the motors. Considering leaving the fuel cooler off for good. Reading thru the ‘Understanding Marine Fuel Coolers’ it sounds like even in a hot climate, it’s only going to effect MAX HP, correct? We’re hot for a couple months, water in the 80’s and …

April 22, 2020 at 5:47 am Thanks Rob, Yes, buzzer alarm box inside the helm. Reason I ask is had a close call when relocating the boat after purchase. The turbo oil return line sprung a leak, oil pressure dropped and the engine ‘powered’ down to limp mode. Shut it down within seconds.

    • Bad raw water pump?

This topic has 9 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byMike Uliasz 4 years ago

November 6, 2019 at 8:35 pm After running the boat last weekend noticed a little raw water under the starboard motor. Looks like a leaking raw water pump. Read some tips on your site, the standard Cummins pumps arenā€™t the best and yā€™all have an upgrade. Think I have one that needs replacing? Any input appreciated. Thanks

March 23, 2020 at 2:43 pm Making progress, got the raw water pump installed without having to mess with the motor mounts. Removed the fuel cooler too. Lucky no rust on the motor mount bolts. It was a 10 hour job on the removal, the generator between the engines made it much worst. Install went much better

    • Moisture on dip stick

January 6, 2020 at 7:34 am Notice some white waxy substance on the dip stick the past 2 times prior to taking the boat out. Been checking the oil each time B4 leaving the dock and the oil level has been constant. Buddy mentioned it could be condensation since itā€™s cooled down, lows mid 20ā€™sinto the 30ā€™s. Serial number 45407742. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Did a digital calibration on the tech this weekend at the dock. 1500 – 1518 digital 2000 – 206…

    • Black smoke at cruise – 6BTA M3 -370 hp

This topic has 10 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byMike Uliasz 4 years ago

September 16, 2019 at 6:19 am Port motor started smoking pretty good this weekend. Had slight black smoke a couple weeks ago. The boat seems over prop (2600 rpms wot at sea trail with slightly fouled running gear) to begin with. She had to work to get on a plane yesterday too. She got up to 2400 rpms and Cruised at 2200 rpms. 3000 rpms no load in slip. I did not run her without an air filter, but will try that next. The after-coolers have been serviced. Any additional …

November 4, 2019 at 6:23 am Joe, It did solve the problem?. Both engines ran in sync nice this weekend. No smoke even when going up on a plane after trolling for a couple hours. Had a mechanic look over the engines Friday. Said my throttle cables are stretched so the throttles are not fully opening up. So thatā€™s next on the list. But he didnā€™t calibrate the tachometer so I still need to get that done. He picked up on some wore steering parts the surveyor missed so …

    • 6BTA 5.9 M3–Coolant System Maintenance

This topic has 16 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byMike Uliasz 4 years ago

August 1, 2019 at 4:29 pm Just purchased a 97 Pursuit with twin 6BTA 5.9-M3 engines, 370 hp. Going thru the cool systems and removed the heat exchangers to clean them. 1 engine has the blue coolant so that’s an easy match, but one has RED. By the color chart is looks more like the NOAT fleet guard, but not totally sure. Coolant was changed 5 years ago, so it sounds like i can just added more to top it off. Any tips or best guesses? Would there be an issue if O…

September 3, 2019 at 3:45 am Ran the boat for a 2nd time after the coolant system Maintenance. Had to get the bottom cleaned by a driver to get her to plane after sitting for 6 weeks. All good temp wise, starboard engine that ran hot (200-205) and had the after-cooler blockage cruised was right on 180 and the port ran the same as B4 just over 180 at cruise. Heat gun showed 177 at the hottest spot I could find (front coolant hose going into the heat exchanger). Water tem…
