February 14, 2021 at 11:17 am Looking for advice at to whether I should stick with the 180 or change to the 160. I’ve read the article and would change to a 160 if I ran off-shore, get the protection factor from the additional prevent alarm at 190. Here are my current boating conditions: Most trips are 15 to 20 minutes cruising before I drop lines, some times less. Max cruises 45 minutes, which I do more just to ‘run’ the boat under a load. Troll a lot,…

February 6, 2024 at 12:01 pm My experience w/the 160 t-stats in 6bta 370s was meh.Ā  Yes, it ran cooler, but too cool at idle/trolling speeds.Ā  They start opening close to 140 which is just too low.Ā  Maybe I got a couple odd balls but they were both exactly the same. Keep the cooling system up to snuff, have an alarm that works, and pay attention.

March 26, 2021 at 6:01 am In October 2020, I bought a 1999 Maxum 4600 powered by twin Cummins 6BTA 5.9L 370ā€™s. Iā€™ve put @ 30 problem-free hours on the engines that have 1361 total hours. July 10, 2019 at 2:34 pm Iā€™m new to diesels , notably the 450C. Purchased and sea trialed the boat (sea Ray 420 DB) in Dec. At the sea trial and engine survey the motors ran in the mid 170ā€™s at cruise and 160-162 at idle. Now As I compare to other 450 C they seem to run about 160 at idle and at cruise. Fast forward 7 months both motors run 175-180F. At cruise Could it be that I have 180 thermostats? Nothing was noted as out of the ordinary with temps at survey and they …

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bySteve Lewis 2 years ago

October 7, 2021 at 10:23 am As sort of a default, we tend to lean towards marinas that carry ValvTect diesel, thinking it’s healthier for the engine. I’m intertested in feedback as to how important this is? I guess an alternative is to get generic diesel as long as you’re dealing with a US marina that has relatively clean fuel, then you can also use an additive.(?)

October 8, 2021 at 12:39 pm Fuel Polishers are an interesting subject. Some of the big trawlers and long range cruisers have separate polishers. Conceptually those are just filters that “pre-filter” the fuel in the tank, some even try to kill microbes with UV light…… I guess the idea is to clean the fuel before it gets to the Primary and Last Chance filters. Get rid of the junk before it has a chance to possibly cause an issue while out at sea. …
