    Hello,
Looking for some advice/next steps to trouble shoot my port tach issue. The tach started working less each time out last season. Usually would start working when going up on a plane, then would start working at lower speeds trolling after running for a while.

I’ve read thru the How To Install a Magnetic Pickup to Drive a Tachometer. Removed the Magnetic pick up, reinstalled as instructed. No luck, it was a little damaged on the bottom. Picked up a used Magnetic pick up from a local place, reinstalled, No luck. Removed my working starboard tach and hooked it up, it did not work either. Are there tests on can do on the incoming and outgoing wires? Are the red/black incoming power and the other correction send the signal to the tach?

The alternator was also just replaced a month ago and the voltage is at 14, 14.5 with a little throttle now vs 12/13. I have not take the boat out of the slip yet this season, will do this weekend weather permitting to see if the tach jumps to life with a load on the engine.

Thanks in advance. This forum has been extremely helped for me over the pasted 2 years, appreciate all the help and useful information.

That’s correct, they are not correlated in any way… the mag pickup is completely independent other than the GROUND.

    Corey,
Thanks for the quick rely and info. Sounds like no dependency on the Alternator/voltage then.

Mike, a mag pickup is a passive device in that it is really basically a magnet. It sends high frequency pulses direct to your tach… it is dependent on a very good GROUND however… so of the two wires involved… one goes to the tach and one needs to see a very good ground. I would suggest chasing down the ground lead first to ensure all is good there. Then, chase the tach lead and see what the conditions of the wires and connections are…

    That’s where I would start….
