November 21, 2023 at 6:35 am Iā€™m looking to downsize from my 58ā€™ Viking with 1200 hp manā€™s. Looking at a 42 post with 480hp TAMDs and wondering how bad the Volvos will be to maintain.Ā

I previously had a 38 Bert with Cummins 480ceā€™s and loved how easy it was to get parts and advice here on this forum. Stepped up to the 58ā€™ viking which is an awesome boat but Iā€™ve needed to hire out a lot of the work and itā€™s really just too much boat for us right now…

November 22, 2023 at 8:10 pm If long term parts availability and reasonable service cost are part of what you are seeking, look for a vessel with Cummins engines built from the early 90’s on.. The 5.9 B or 8.3L C’s are the engines of choice… In the best of times, getting anything for a Volvo marine engine has always been a challenge,Ā at least here in S. Calif.

November 15, 2017 at 10:06 am This came up briefly in another discussion but I thought it made sense to make the topic it’s own thread. Does anyone know if, on the 480CE, the engine data (such fuel burn, loading, RPM, etc) is sent over J1939 bus as well as the J1708 bus? The “C8.3 Marine Electronic Control System Troubleshooting and Repair Manual” shows a pin-out for the 9-pin diagnostic connector that shows both J1708 and J1939 high and low conductors. B…

    • How Do Diesel ECM's Typically Calculate Fuel Burn and Engine Load
