Can i pull the screen on my ZF280-1 to check the screen with oil in the transmissions, or will it drain out?

Also, where is the magnet i’ve seen referenced? Is it visible through the hole once the screen has been removed?

My port engine gear oil is showing up fairly grey compared to my starboard gear oil, which still looks brand new after about 200 hours. Trying to figure out what’s going on. Is there anything specifically i should be looking for on the screen and magnet as sings of a problem? Metal shavings i assume?

    Tony,
Measurements were taken on the dashboard and also on the coupling itself with an external meter. Now the pressure is back as it should be 23/24 Bar.
I am still worried about the black oil. The oil is always black from the revision. Overhaul because the clutch slipped. After the revision, the oil is always black.

Are you accurately measuring clutch pressures in forward at the dash? If you are not doing that, then not much of an answer could be given..

As the the metal, left over from the repair —–Not to worry at this point

I had a loss of pressure in his forward. After investigation, a specialist from ZF has discovered this damage and mounted new parts, this is the expired report (Report:
Bb gearbox flushed with gas oil, then 4 liters of new oil, filter check and cleaning
Replacement of 2 pieces of inlet rings and inlet sleeve.
Test run and sail, no details noticed during maneuvering.
Customer has paid the invoice in cash). The magnet had iron and in the filter also something of a material, but this was not magnetic. This gearbox was overhauled last year and after 3 months I changed the oil (40 hours) and then also had some iron in the filter and on the magnet, the oil was already dark then. I think there was a problem with the inlet bus back then. everything is working again now, but is it normal after 6 hours of sailing that the oil is dark with a golden glow? And can there be consequential damage caused by the metal particle? I want to rinse again with clean oil after 20 hours. See the photos there was much more metal than in the photos and still metal after refreshing.

    Johan,

You have broken piston rings and a ring carrier that is done.. Have you fixed all or ?? This would have nothing to do with the “normal maintenance of checking the suction screen or magnet……………..Do you own a full repair manual & parts manual?

Have you found out what causes the dark oil?
There was still some material in the filter and on the magnet.
I have the same problem, the part on which the pump is mounted is broken. and has released metal particle.
I have changed the oil but after 6 hours of sailing it is already gray again.

    Thanks, very helpful.

There doesn’t seem to have been a loss of oil. I don’t know how old the gear oil coolers are – i’ve had the boat for a couple of years, the PO had no records of them having been replaced. That probably makes them at least 5 years old, possibly original to when the boat was re-powered in 2003.

Removing the ZF Magnetic Cap & Screen

Some oil will be lost, a few ounces or so.

See this post as to the removing the screen, etc: https://www.sbmar.com/community/topic/removing-the-magnet-screen-hex/ You’re 280 will be same as the 220 I pictured there.

Original gear oil coolers? Any change in oil level – up or down?
