I’m looking to downsize from my 58’ Viking with 1200 hp man’s. Looking at a 42 post with 480hp TAMDs and wondering how bad the Volvos will be to maintain.

I previously had a 38 Bert with Cummins 480ce’s and loved how easy it was to get parts and advice here on this forum. Stepped up to the 58’ viking which is an awesome boat but I’ve needed to hire out a lot of the work and it’s really just too much boat for us right now. Maybe when we retire “someday…”

I’m curious if anyone has experience with these Volvos and can compare the parts cost and availability to Cummins, or man, for that matter

I’ve seen everything from “all diesel parts are expensive, Volvos are no different than anything else” to “Volvo makes their parts out of solid gold”

I have noticed that the Volvo manuals and parts lists are very hard to find. Cummins was great because I could just log it to quickserve and find anything. Even with man I had serial number specific parts diagrams for my engines and good manuals. But I have yet to find a good source for Volvo manuals and parts lists

I’m also really worried about parts scarcity/obsolescence almost more than cost. It’s annoying but I can handle paying $5k for a Volvo part that the Cummins equivalent would have been $3.5k. But I’m worried about the “it will take 4 months to get that o-ring from Switzerland” scenario. I’m in central Florida so at least it’s not a boat service desert.

Curious what folk’s experience is with these engines, in comparison to other 2000 era engines, and what I can expect in terms of maintainability.

Thanks folks!

If long term parts availability and reasonable service cost are part of what you are seeking, look for a vessel with Cummins engines built from the early 90’s on.. The 5.9 B or 8.3L C’s are the engines of choice…

In the best of times, getting anything for a Volvo marine engine has always been a challenge, at least here in S. Calif.
