    • Is fresh water flushing worthwhile? 1 2 3

This topic has 55 replies, has 22 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 4 years ago

January 19, 2017 at 8:08 am Years ago, following Tony’s recommendation, I hooked up fresh water flush fittings to my engine’s strainer and started flushing religiously. Within less than a year I noticed that the engine zincs were holding up much better; in fact after three years they are still going strong. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I’ve tried multiple searches and cannot find the Tony’s Tips article on fresh water flushing. It’s referenced in the “marine age” article but no link and I have had zero luck finding it. Are you looking for a “how-to” ? There is no such instruction as one size does not fit all. Many many variables with some of the key components being your seawa…

    • 6cta Fuel in bilge after shutdown

October 4, 2017 at 6:18 am I Have a 96 Searay with twin 6CTA Cummins. I find fuel in the bilge after shutdown and have been unable to locate the source. I can’t see any evidence of fuel coming from the tanks, water seperators, fuel lines to or from the engine or filters. Anyone else experience this?

October 17, 2017 at 6:29 am Thanks Tom. I feel as if that may be closer to the issue, as I have not experienced any leak after changing the Perko filters and cleaning it.

    • Electronic Throttle stuck at half

March 8, 2017 at 5:26 pm I’ve got an intermittent problem with my QSB 5.9. It won’t go to full power. The throttle position indicator on my vessel view display will show somewhere between 40 and 50% and I can only get about 1500 to 1600 RPM. There are no fault codes displayed. The problem will clear when the engine has been shut down for a while, but may come back at any time. However, if it runs Ok it will keep running Ok until it is shut down, and if power…

    • Cleaning air filters

This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated byDavid Hays 6 years ago

May 1, 2017 at 6:13 pm I’ve searched thru the forums here, boatdiesel, and Tiara but struck out.  Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have twin QSB 5.9 engines with cone shaped air filters that look like K&N linen filters used in cars.  Should I just wash them in mild detergent and oil them with K&N oil?  Or do I just replace them?   At what interval?  Thx.

May 13, 2017 at 9:15 am Thanks for the information.  Again, I learn something new, which is why I asked. I have no idea if/when the internal coalescing filter was changed.  I also don’t know when/if the filter was cleaned last.  1000 hours on the engine at this point, of which 250 were hours I put on over a year. So far as I mentioned above, the gauge on the Airsep has not shown any restriction, but I think it is time to clean the filter just based on its appeara…

March 8, 2017 at 3:37 pm QSC-600s. First complete removal after 800 hours.   Fresh water flushed each time boat was to sit longer than 5 days.  Photos speak for themselves I believe.  Thanks Tony for your advice on this subject 6 years ago.
