This was discovered on my boat today. Port engine turbo. Any idea what the problem could be/how to repair if possible?

Marco PatiParticipantRick — were there torque specs when resetting the bolts on the cover plate?

Marco PatiParticipantSuffering from waste gate soot as well
Team — I have 2008 QSC 8.3s on a Sea Ray 44 (1380 hrs) and am also having soot buildup on occasion (stbd engine). I have been watching when it happens, and seems to be (a) on hard acceleration when the turbo spools up – throttles >2100 rpm, or (b) during long runs with set rpm 2100-2200. I can tell the soot is happening when the load splits between the two engines and the fuel consumption jumps on the stbd engine. Soot levels and location are similar to the photos on the thread.
Bringing the throttles up slowly seems to avoid the issue under acceleration, but not at cruise.
Any ideas on if I should dive into flange gasket replacement or use high-temp paste (I saw the discussion about Deacon High Temp paste).
I’m a season away from the 5 yr/500 hr major maintenance. Looking to see if I can make it that far. Recommendations welcome. Is this a good way to go?
Thanks

Had the same really messey soot issues….DeMann CUMMINS replaced with new style metal gasket verses what looked like a synthetic material from original build. No problems now.

High temp paste
Deacon makes some fairly high temp paste/sealant compounds that are probably very suitable for the scenario of sealing up the waste gate shaft and cover.

Waste Gate exhaust soot / leakage
I have yet to see Waste gate linkage not seep some soot–They all do ( molecule by molecule) but yours is a little excessive.. Clean it all up and watch it for awhile………In the mean time, I need to find how to get the some of the high temp paste that Cummins uses to semi-seal the shaft, and seal the round cover.. .Been meaning to do this, but keep forgetting
How about a picture from farther away so I can see the entire turbo & exhaust..I need to be sure something else may not be going on too.
