April 18, 2022 at 8:11 am After the thorough information and write-ups from Tony and the SBMar team, and the readily available parts kits they supply, I decided to tackle my aftercoolers this year. This is my second year with this vessel, a 2001 Tiara 3800 Open with 6CTAā€™s, roughly 500 hours. It was previously serviced by Gorham Diesel out of the Boston area. The aftercoolers were replaced with brand new ones 4 years ago, so I am assuming that this is the first ā€œserviceā€…

April 28, 2024 at 3:02 pm That starboard core looks like crap but maybe try pressure testing it after cleaning it incase it still holds pressure? Ā  I dont have the SMX housing (does one exist?), but I do have the SMX core on my Port Side with the original housing and no issues, pressure test passed. My 2nd year with it btw, previous owner didnt do the bench and when I went to do the bench I found corrosion and a failed pressure testĀ

October 1, 2023 at 8:39 am I’ll ask again, has anyone had problems or failures when switching to SMX. More so referring to the infamous nut failure grinding up in the gears? Ā asking bc I just spent about 2k on the smx pumps, and have seen conflicting info. thx -Lewis

September 1, 2023 at 1:14 pm I am getting ready to buy a Sea Ray 40 motor yacht. The years that I’m looking at have either the 6CTA 8.3 480CE (480hp) or the QSB 5.9 (425hp) I’m aware of the valve problem on the 480 CE made worse by improperly propped boats and clogged aftercoolers. Other than that which is the best engine for this application? Why? Thanks

March 29, 2023 at 5:30 pm Took my aftercooler in for testing at Niemic my local Cummins dealer and the core bundle had pinholes and there is pitting in the housing right up to the oring seals. July 8, 2021 at 1:29 pm I have a 1990 6BT 5.9 with a a new dual Racor turbine set up. • 6CTA with smx

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 3 years ago

November 14, 2020 at 11:56 am My 6CTA’s were refitted with SMX raw water pumps by the previous owner. The pressure port is feeding the PSS dripless packing seal. In my opinion the pressure and flow from the pump is way too much (maybe 5x) for this purpose. When the dripless system was replaced 2 years ago the amount of water escaping between the carbon disc and the stainless steel collar was frightening at 1700 rpm. So anyone have thoughts on this??

July 8, 2020 at 6:22 am You have a leak in the fuel system somewhere. Air is getting into the fuel system which is why you are having a problem while it sits. The longer it sits the more air is allowed into the system. My boat is an 02 and due to age I replaced all the fuel lines and replaced Racors with spin on filters with squeeze bulbs/valve system sold by Tony. I also replaced all the hoses on both engines.
