Water heater loop cap-off?
This topic has 3 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 1, 2023 at 6:48 am I have a domestic hot water heater with a heat exchanger loop connected to my QSB 8.3.Ā The water tank is leaking; I have to remove the water tank to send it for a warranty claim.Ā Therefore, I won’t have a water heater for a while and need to rig the engine to run.Ā Ā

My question is:Ā how should I handle the coolant loop hoses out of the engine? Option 1:Ā Cap off the input and output hoses for the coolant loop.Ā Op…
3 RepliesJune 20, 2023 at 3:06 pm Just bought a maxum 4600 with twin 8.3s.Ā Ā Rusted out water heater had the coolant lines barbed together. I installed a new heater and reconnected the water and coolant lines.Ā When you pull the barb, coolant will want to drain all over the space.Ā It is not under pressure so doesn’t take much to stop.Ā I put the heater in place, attached the water lines, made sure I had clamps ready to go, and I pulled the barb and put both lines on their…

Post-pump FW flush QSC 8.3
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
February 14, 2023 at 12:50 pm I have a QSC 8.3 600 and am considering a different FW flush arrangement. Ā I currently am using a flush cap, but I think leaving the sea cock open when flushing is not as effective as I would like. Iād like some advice if what Iām thinking is feasible.Ā

Iām considering cutting the stainless tube between the raw water pump and the oil/fuel cooler and inserting a bronze tee adapter with a flush valve. Ā The tee adapter woul…
2 RepliesFebruary 19, 2023 at 10:19 am I’ve read the SB article and watched the video on the subject.Ā Based on those materials, its not accurate that Tony “does not like what I’m suggesting”.Ā Ā

Both the article and the video state that a post-pump flush setup is an acceptable option, so long as the exhaust has a natural gravity drain through a straight, non-lift muffler.Ā The caveat is that this won’t flush the strainer or pump.Ā Ā …

QSC air filter wonāt resemble
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
October 9, 2022 at 7:04 am I have a QSC 600 with the standard walker airsep filter. Ā Recently I removed the filter element and silencer lid for inspection and maintenance. The silencer was a bit hard to get off. Ā Normally it pops right off.Ā When reassembling, the silencer lid will not fully insert and seat into the housing. Ā There is a good 3/8-1/2ā gap that prevents the v-band clamp from locking. Iāve tried pressing hard, wiggling, rotating. Ā Itās almost like the housin…
3 RepliesOctober 14, 2022 at 4:49 pm I got it sorted. Ā The o-ring was I the wrong position. When the lid was removed, the smaller o-ring was on the smaller shaft of the lid. Ā It LOOKS like it should fit at the base of the lid. Ā It actually belongs on outer lip of the lid receiver. Reinstalled it and all fit properly. Ā Ā

What is this filter?
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 14, 2022 at 10:06 am Found this filter in the spares left by the previous owner. Ā Doesnāt seem to fit any of my gear which includes a QSC 600 and a Cummins Onan 9lw generator. Ā

Any idea what it would be for? The top is pretty rusted so I wouldnāt want to use it anyway. Ā Is model FS19526.Ā

2 RepliesMarch 26, 2022 at 12:20 pm Thanks. Ā Seems like a random piece of gear. Ā I tossed it, just wondered what it would be used on. Ā

QSC 8.3 Turbo soot, aftercooler cap grease leak
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
April 29, 2021 at 7:18 am I have a new-to-me 2019 Back Cove 37 with a QSC 8.3 600 engine. 157 hours. Recently picked it up in Charlestown, SC and drove it 981 miles up the ICW to Long Island. Pleased to say the fuel burn was a spot-on match to the Cummins fuel demand chart. Checking things out post-trip, I noticed 2 things I’d like to understand: 1) There is some sooty-type material on the turbo near the wastegate. There is what looks like a heat shield over…
4 RepliesMay 3, 2021 at 3:29 pm I wouldn’t wait to do the AC, though very unlikely there’s any issue but it’s a relatively easy item to do given all that room and a small price to pay to get the peace of mind. There’s no grease or other lubricants in that area, other than what was used to assemble the AC when new. Maybe, possibly, being pushed out due to some beginning corrosion taking place, but being so new, unlikely in a terrible state at all. Get it…

QSC 8.3 600 coolant overflow bottle level
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
November 11, 2020 at 2:29 pm What should be the normal level on a coolant overflow bottle for a QSC 8.3 600? I took a test ride on a boat recently. After the run and checking the engine space, I observed the plastic remote overflow bottle mounted on the bulkhead was empty. The engine was still hot so I didn’t want to open the coolant cap and check the level. There was also a few drips of oil coming from under the crankcase cover gasket after a run. The run for …
2 RepliesNovember 11, 2020 at 6:41 pm That grease has most likely has been there since new and a good thing. Is it greenish? Regardless, if you buy it, first thing you should do is to service them as well replace all the zincs, etc. Drips of oil is not normal but may not be a huge issue to fix either. Needs to be investigated though. No coolant in overflow bottle not desirable as there really should be some in there, as Tony mentions. Good luck.

QSC 8.3 600 vs. Volvo D8 600
This topic has 6 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
October 22, 2020 at 7:03 am I’m looking at a boat that has the option of 2 engine packages: a Cummins QSB 8.6 600hp, or a Volvo D8 600hp. Any thoughts on the differences between these packages in terms of overall performance, service requirements, longevity, and ease of owner-performed maintenance? I’m somewhat familiar with Cummins from having owned and worked on a QSB 6.7 480. The Volvo is new to me so I have no reference. Unfortunately I can’t co…
6 RepliesOctober 23, 2020 at 1:50 am I believe the Cummins engine you are referencing is the QSC 8.3 600. I will not be able to offer a ātechnicalā reply comparing the Cummins vs Volvo. while Volvo Penta engines excel with their unique marine torque. High torque at low rpm gives rapid acceleration to the plane and massive maneuvering power fishing equipment stores in dubai. Even at high load and high rpm, the torque remains strong to provide efficient cruising speed in all conditio…

Aftercooler cap bolt broke
This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
April 6, 2020 at 7:50 am Reinstalled the bronze aftercooler caps after servicing the my QSB 6.7 480 aftercooler and using plenty of Alco Metalube. Per the user manual I used a a torque wrench set to 33 ft lbs. A number of the bolts kept turning and didn’t hit the spec’d torque value. I felt one of them pop. Luckily it was only partially broken and the entire bolt came out easily. The bolt was deformed and stretched. It immediately snapped in half in my…
5 RepliesApril 7, 2020 at 5:02 pm Those same bolts could be used in cast iron or steel, where the 33 ft-lb spec would be close to appropriate. I would check the calibration of the torque wrench. It sounds like a lot more torque may have been applied. I recently did the whole aftercooler thing on my QSB5.9. I used the spec in the Cummins manual (32 ft-lb) with no difficulty at all. I have done a bit of “wrenching” in my time, and this felt fairly tight, but not ridicu…

QAB 6.7 Aftercooler servicing
This topic has 1 reply, has 1 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
March 15, 2020 at 3:03 pm I started to take apart the aftercooler in my QSB 6.7 480 for servicing. I shredded an impeller and knew I needed to clean it out. This is my first foray into aftercoolers and Ihave some questions. – There is a rubber strip on the inside of each of the end caps. Upon disassembly the neither strip was attached to the cap, and they are both too long to fit back into the rib. Is this normal? – Can the core be removed from the ho…
1 ReplyMarch 16, 2020 at 6:09 am Sorry, I mis-labeled. That’s not the exhaust tube; it’s the air crossover tube from the bottom of the turbo that feeds intake air to the aftercooler. Anyway, I do need to replace the o-ring since it was disassembled? The manuals I’ve looked at on QuickServer aren’t clear on this point and I can’t find a part number for the o-ring either.

Fresh water flush design
This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
July 29, 2019 at 2:30 pm I’m considering how to install a fresh water flush system on my boat to both flush the system, as well as help winterize. I made up a draft diagram – are there any obvious errors? Some details: Designed so I can simply attach the fresh water hose and run the engines to flush. Engines would be flushed regularly; AC included mainly for winterization purposes. Want to flush 3 systems: Main engine (QSB 6.7 480), Cummins Onan 7.5 kWh G…
7 RepliesAugust 1, 2019 at 8:29 am Hi Brad I remember seeing one on youtube a guy did on a 6bta, really neat but simple design. Just search 6bta fresh water flush and you should see it. If I recall correctly he removed a plug on the sea water pump and piped up his inlet with valve in to the pump. Good Luck

New boat, new to diesels
This topic has 19 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
April 17, 2019 at 12:16 pm Hi all, I’ve put in an offer on a new boat and am getting ready to see it for the first time. Coming from a freshwater cooled Mercruiser outdrive setup, the transition to a straight shaft diesel is quite a change. I’ve been doing some research but still feel very much the newbie. What kinds of things should I look for upon my initial viewing of the boat? Assuming all goes well, what kinds of things are important that I should do re…
19 RepliesJuly 1, 2019 at 7:58 am Tony, I defer to your expertise. I can say that the oil has just been changed. The sea trial was performed on commission so it had not been run. There was almost zero time on the new oil. The boat had not been idled dockside on the changed oil. It was at near idle speed for 10-15 minutes each way in a no-wake zone to and from the sea trial area. During the sea trial the engine was at temp and run at a variety of speeds for about 30 minute…

Water heater loop cap-off?
