What should be the normal level on a coolant overflow bottle for a QSC 8.3 600?

I took a test ride on a boat recently. After the run and checking the engine space, I observed the plastic remote overflow bottle mounted on the bulkhead was empty. The engine was still hot so I didn’t want to open the coolant cap and check the level.

There was also a few drips of oil coming from under the crankcase cover gasket after a run. The run for about 2 hours total at no wake and cruising speeds (2500-2700 rpm) plus a brief period of WOT. The drips were not present before the run. Is this expected or abnormal?

Lastly, it looked like there was some grease that oozed out from behind the aftercooler endcaps. They have not been removed since being installed at the factory (no marks on the cap bolts, paint intact). I’m assuming this is not a big deal, just some residual installation grease (a good thing?).

The boat is a 2019, 104 hours on the engine. I think it’s been sitting for a bit since it was sold. Sorry, didn’t think to take a photo at the time.

That grease has most likely has been there since new and a good thing. Is it greenish? Regardless, if you buy it, first thing you should do is to service them as well replace all the zincs, etc.

Drips of oil is not normal but may not be a huge issue to fix either. Needs to be investigated though. No coolant in overflow bottle not desirable as there really should be some in there, as Tony mentions.

    Good luck.

Without pictures of what you see so we can “see”, I am just guessing. Won’t do that in this case

Overflow bottle– Engine cold and topped off–Coolant bottle at 40-50%.. At temp, the bottle should RISE 1-3″, cool down the next day back to the same 40-50% what all is right.
